An interview with:
COACH BRUCE BOUDREAU
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN
RYAN GETZLAF
Q. Can I get your first thoughts after the loss and how it will impact the series.
COACH BOUDREAU: Well, as far as my first thoughts about the loss, I thought our guys worked awful hard. It’s too bad for them that they didn’t succeed.
I thought the chances might have been close. Everything was close. I mean, faceoffs... It was two really good teams who didn’t want to lose going at it.
Both teams had an opportunity to win on numerous occasions. They were the ones that finally did it.
Q. I think everyone anticipated a series that could go to the limit. Did you anticipate there may possibly be a game of that nature somewhere in this series?
COACH BOUDREAU: You don’t think, Gee, this could go into three or four overtimes. You never think that.
Was it a team we were playing that we thought would be nip-and-tuck the whole series? Yeah.
To me it was a confidence boost, this game. I mean, yeah, we didn’t get the final result we wanted, but for almost six periods, you know, we played really well. Five-on-five, had opportunities. But I thought we did a really good job.
To me, that game was a game that I would look and say, Hey, man, we can play with these guys. That’s the way I took it. That’s why I’m excited about getting on the plane and getting back at it.
Q. Your only other loss was in an overtime game. Talk about rebounding.
COACH BOUDREAU: We’ve done it all year. I would be more surprised if we weren’t able to rebound and play a really great game than if it went the other way around.
I’ve been with this group for a long time now. You can see it. They were, rightfully so, very angry last night. Not disappointed, but angry. That’s a good thing.
Q. Do you consider at all, given your incredible depth, of inserting another player or two for Game 3?
COACH BOUDREAU: It’s a good question. We’ve had initial discussions in the coaching staff about it. It’s possible because we think we’ve got a lot of good players that aren’t playing.
But we’ll have to talk about it more.
Q. If it is a war of attrition, this series, do you believe that favors you and this team?
COACH BOUDREAU: You know, I wouldn’t say that because the guys that play the big minutes for them are so used to playing the big minutes. This is not a new thing for those guys.
So, I mean, if it was a team that hadn’t gone through the wars that Chicago’s gone through, I’d say, yeah, we’ll take that battle anytime.
But I think they’re well-equipped for it. They know what’s at stake all the time. I wouldn’t say it’s an advantage for us.
Q. Bruce, is there any different mindset at all now going on the road even as opposed to the first two rounds where you’ve maintained the series lead throughout?
COACH BOUDREAU: I think the mindset’s the same. Just keep pushing forward, pushing forward, going as hard as we can. They’ve got the last change, that will be the biggest difference, the home crowd. That will be the biggest difference.
But I think the last two years we’ve won more road games than any team in the league. So we’ll take our chances.
Q. The way Crawford played last night, the way he’s played since his early struggles, is there any sense you have a tough customer there now that you’re dealing with?
COACH BOUDREAU: He’s won a Stanley Cup. He knows what it’s all about. He knows how to dig deep.
I don’t think he’s going to get rattled anytime soon. He’s going to persevere and go through, as is our guy.
Q. Are all the guys okay? Freddie was taking some fluids after the game.
COACH BOUDREAU: They’re tired, but they’re good. They’re ready to go.
Q. How did you deal with that in between periods or afterwards, anyone requiring IVs, supplementary type things?
COACH BOUDREAU: You know what, just the normal stuff. Drink a lot of fluids, electrolytes. I’m not a doctor. They were cramping up a little bit, then they’d come back after they got something to drink and they were fine.
We made it through. I think all the guys are ready to go again.
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN
Q. Francois, have you ever played so many minutes before?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: I can’t remember. I remember in 2001, I ended up playing in a Calder Cup final. That year we lost 3-2 in a fourth overtime actually. I don’t know how many minutes I played. It’s funny, they made a T-shirt about it because it was the longest game in AHL history that we ended up losing unfortunately.
But those are fun games to play.
Yeah, still have the T-shirt at home.
I feel good. Woke up, had a good amount of sleep. I went to bed as soon as I got home. Didn’t take too long for me to fall asleep.
Tough one to lose, but at the same time I think we feel good about ourselves. We had our chances, we just couldn’t capitalize on them.
Q. After something like that, Beauch, is it tougher to recover mentally or physically?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: I’ll tell you that tomorrow after I see how I feel in the game.
But I think maybe for some guys mentally it’s hard, it’s tough to lose, but you’ve got to get over it.
We lost one game. It could have been a 6-2 game after three periods, but it ended up being a 3-2 game in third overtime. We lost it and then we have to move on and focus about tomorrow because, you know, like I said before, the next game is always the biggest one.
Q. Is it tougher to put away something like that when you know you’re literally inches away from a 2-0 series lead?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: No, no. The way I see it, it’s more the way we could have won. We were right there. It’s not hard to move on because, like I said, we had our chances. It’s not like we were really out of it. Nothing to do with the game.
It could have been 2-0, but it’s 1-1 and we’re going to Chicago.
Q. Do you do anything special dietary?wise to come back from a game like this?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: Lots of water, fluid, Gatorade, stuff like that, to get your weight back up. Got to make sure you’re well-hydrated for tomorrow. If you’re not, the legs are going to be burning pretty early.
Q. What did they do differently in the game? Surrounding the net more effectively?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: On their first two power plays, that’s what they did. We expected that. Fortunately we got those two penalty kills. Then they were trying to get deflections in the front, and that’s how they scored both goals.
Even in the overtime, it was a puck thrown at the net, went off their guy, the puck was right there behind Freddie.
Those are battles that we’ve got to win.
Q. Do you feel you have to effectively straddle that line of being physical, but being penalized for being physical?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: Yeah, because five-on-five, that’s when we’re playing at our best. That’s when we burn teams down. We get in the offensive zone, we get that puck going, we get the cycle game going. Our big guys are handling the puck.
Q. You’re such an effective communicator with this team. Have you said anything to the guys as a group about how you move on from this game?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: Yeah, we talked after the game. All we said was that we lost one game and we got to get it back in Chicago.
Like I said, we had a good game. We played well five-on-five. We got to win those battles in front on the penalty kill and we’ll be fine.
Q. You obviously played in Chicago and you know what the atmosphere is like. I would imagine it probably doesn’t faze you given where you’ve played in this post-season?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: We’ll be really excited. Gets everybody going. We talked about the atmosphere in Winnipeg and Calgary. This is even going to be crazier. I mean, it starts with the national anthem. It’s known for that.
It doesn’t matter if you’re home or away, every time you play there you’re really excited at the beginning of the game right away.
Q. The way their defensemen played so many minutes, those four guys, did you see any sign of fatigue? Do you feel if it continues to go like this, that that’s favorable to you?
FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN: Yeah, hopefully. I mean, that’s our game plan. Our game plan is to get the puck in deep and forecheck their D men, finish our checks, play down low.
You know, they’re in good physical shape. Obviously they’ve been playing most of the year with four or five defensemen. They’re used to it. We just got to make sure we keep that puck down low and focus on our offense.
RYAN GETZLAF
Q. Ryan, I’m sure you don’t anticipate going into a series where there’s going to be a three overtime game. These two teams here, is that game emblematic of what can happen in this series in terms of how tight it can be and how little can decide it?
RYAN GETZLAF: Oh, yeah. I think going into the series we were well aware we’re pretty evenly matched teams. There are going to be some pretty good hockey games. Overtime’s obviously part of playoff hockey and excitement. Last night was one of those great games.
Q. How did you fare physically? How did you go about recovering from that grinding game?
RYAN GETZLAF: Well, I mean, the recovery starts last night. A big part of it is today, what we’re going to do today to prepare for tomorrow.
I felt pretty good out there for the most part when you’re talking about playing six periods of hockey. It’s not normal for anybody. As hockey players, we don’t do that very often.
I felt pretty good overall.
Q. Ryan, how did you make sense of it all? The puck hitting the post four times, how do you cast that aside and try to find positives that can allow you to move on?
RYAN GETZLAF: Well, I think our mindset this whole playoff has been just to push forward, do what we need to do, get prepared for the next game. No matter what the outcome is the one before, it’s about the next one now.
You know, never once did we think we were going to sweep the Chicago Blackhawks. We lost one, now we’ve just got to prepare again.
It was a fun, emotional game. Obviously you’d like to be on the winning side of it, but it is what it is.
Q. The big advantage you guys had, and it’s led by you, more of the same is coming in Chicago or Anaheim?
RYAN GETZLAF: We’re going to try to maintain. We’re going to play our game, do the things we do, tighten up a little bit. We got in a little bit of penalty trouble early in the game. We need to win the special teams battles. That’s a big part of the hockey game now.
Q. Ryan, having gone to Winnipeg and Calgary, you know what it’s like to be in a hostile environment. Does that prepare you for Chicago?
RYAN GETZLAF: Yeah, it’s going to be great. We’re excited about it. Our building was rocking last night. It was fun. Playoff time is a great time of year. Like you said, we’ve played in some pretty hostile buildings in the first two rounds and we expect nothing else tomorrow.
Q. As a forward, how conscious are you that Chicago is kind of keen on defense and how much is that part of the strategy?
RYAN GETZLAF: Luckily it plays into our game. If we can make a point where we get the puck deep, do things down below their circles, it can make a big difference for our game as well as make their D men play in their zone. The more they play down there, the less they can jump up in the play.
As the series goes on, we plan on continuing to do that, get the puck, make them work in their zone.
Q. Ryan, the way that Crawford was playing last night, obviously the benefit of some posts, but he made some big saves. Do you get a sense you have a tough customer to deal with?
RYAN GETZLAF: Yeah. I mean, we know Crawford. He’s been there. He’s played well in the playoffs. He’s played well throughout the season. There’s no secrets there. We didn’t expect that he was going to let in a bunch of goals.
We’re going to keep working, keep going to the net, getting in those dirty areas, so to speak, making sure those rebounds, if we have an opportunity, shoot them in.
THE MODERATOR: Thank you very much.
