The New York Landmarks Conservancy Presents: Tourist In Your Own Town #39 - Church of Notre Dame - Morningside Heights
405 West 114th Street
The Eglise de Notre Dame or Church of Notre Dame in Morningside Height, began in 1910 as a mission chapel serving French-speaking Catholics. It was later expanded in 1914 by architects Cross & Cross. The Church and rectory were both designated City Landmarks in 1967.
The impressive French neoclassical exterior is equally matched with the interior that boasts an unusual feature ... a replica of the grotto in Lourdes France, where in 1858 Saint Bernadette was said to have witnessed the appearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
