2015 STANLEY CUP FINAL POST-GAME NOTES - GAME 1
CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS 2 at TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING 1 - JUNE 3, 2015
TERAVAINEN, VERMETTE RALLY BLACKHAWKS IN STANLEY CUP FINAL OPENER
Blackhawks forwards Teuvo Teravainen (13:28) and Antoine Vermette (15:26) scored goals less than two minutes apart late in the third period to give Chicago a 2-1 victory. Neither Chicago goal-scorer was with the club at the start of the season. Teravainen was with Chicago's AHL affiliate in Rockford, IL, and made his season debut with the Blackhawks on Jan. 4. Vermette was acquired from Arizona in exchange for D Klas Dahlbeck and a 1st-round pick in 2015 on Feb. 28, two days before March 2 NHL trade deadline.
Teravainen, 20, and Vermette, 32, each scored his third goal of the 2015 postseason:
* For Vermette, it marked his second clutch goal in the past two weeks. His double-overtime tally gave the Blackhawks a 5-4 win over Anaheim in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final at United Center on May 23. Prior to the two GWG in his past five games, Vermette had one such goal in his first 68 career playoff games.
* Teravainen has 3-5—8 this postseason (13 GP) compared to 4-5—9 in 37 career regular season games.
KEITH CONTINUES PROLIFIC PLAYOFF SCORING
Chicago's Duncan Keith earned an assist on Teuvo Teravainen's game-tying goal in the third period, extending career highs with his 17th assist and 19th point of the playoffs -- tops among all NHL defensemen. Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Keith became the first defenseman to record 17 or more assists in one playoff year since Brian Leetch posted 23 with the New York Rangers in 1994.
Keith's 19 points also are the most by a defenseman in one playoff year since 2006, when Chris Pronger registered 5-16--21 with Edmonton.
Keith has 0-8--8 during a five-game assist/point streak, the longest such run in his playoff career.
BLACKHAWKS STAGE THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK
The Blackhawks recorded their second win of the 2015 postseason when trailing after two periods (2-4) and their first such win in regulation. They entered the third period of Game 4 of their First Round series against Nashville trailing 2-1 and rebounded to win 3-2 in triple overtime.
The Lightning suffered their first loss of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs when leading after two periods (8-1) and their first regulation loss in such a scenario since the start of the regular season (41-1-2). The club also lost for the first time in the 2015 playoffs when scoring first (9-1).
KILLORN CONTINUES TO PRODUCE FOR LIGHTNING
Lightning forward Alex Killorn opened the scoring at 4:31 of the first period with his eighth goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Killorn, who notched 15 goals in 71 games during the regular season, also scored the first and what ultimately proved to be the game-winning goal in Tampa Bay's 2-0 win over the New York Rangers in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final at Madison Square Garden last Friday.
Killorn has recorded 5-5--10 in his past 10 games dating to Game 5 of the Second Round series against Montreal on May 9. He ranks third on the Lightning in playoff goals (8) and points (17, tied) in 21 games.
ANOTHER NAIL-BITER TO OPEN STANLEY CUP FINAL
Tonight marked the sixth consecutive opening game of the Stanley Cup Final to be decided by one goal:
2015: CHI 2 at TBL 1
2014: NYR 2 at LAK 3 (OT) – LAK won series 4-1
2013: BOS 3 at CHI 4 (3OT) – CHI won series 4-2
2012: LAK 2 at NJD 1 (OT) – LAK won series 4-2
2011: BOS 0 at VAN 1 – BOS won series 4-3
2010: PHI 5 at CHI 6 – CHI won series 4-2
TEAMS WINNING GAME 1 OF THE STANLEY CUP FINAL
Teams winning Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final have gone on to win the championship in 58 of 75 seasons (77%) since the League introduced the best-of-seven format in 1939. The Lightning fell to 1-3 in series-opening games of the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs while the Blackhawks improved to 3-1.
BLACKHAWKS SNAP BISHOP SHUTOUT STREAK AT 113:28
Teuvo Teravainen's game-tying, third-period goal snapped Lightning goaltender Ben Bishop's shutout streak at 113:28. Bishop had not allowed a goal since being pulled in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New York Rangers. He blanked the Rangers in Game 7 at Madison Square Garden and kept the Blackhawks off the scoresheet for the first 53:28 of tonight's game.
