The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) ® congratulates Karen Chupka, senior vice president, CES and corporate business strategy, CEA, for being named to Meeting & Conventions’ (M&C) Top 25 Women in the Meetings Industry list. The list recognizes 25 accomplished, influential female professionals for being high achievers, advocates and innovators who have helped to shape and strengthen the meetings industry. Chupka oversees CES, the world’s gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technology, CES Asia™, Asia’s platform to showcase global innovation that defines the consumer technology industry, and related events including CEA’s Unveiled series.
“We are so proud of Karen here at CEA. Her leadership and strategic skills have contributed greatly to the substantial growth and overall success of CES, making our show the global ‘must attend’ event for anyone engaged in consumer technology,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. “Karen’s passion and dedication serve as a great example for our team at CEA, as well as the greater meetings industry. She is a true role model and so deserving of this recognition.”
This past May, Chupka oversaw the launch of the inaugural CES Asia, a brand new tradeshow in Shanghai, China showcasing the full breadth and depth of the innovation value-chain in the Asian marketplace while providing a platform for key global businesses to grow and reinforce their brands. CES Asia exceeded all expectations in its first year and set a new standard for world-class events in China. During its three day run, the event welcomed more than 20,000 attendees, including more than 1,200 members of the media. The show included 212 exhibitors from 16 countries and spanned 21,875 gross square meters of exhibit space.
“Only six months after putting together the biggest CES to date, our team successfully launched CES Asia, a brand new show in a brand new market,” said Chupka. “We work hard to produce great shows that benefit and support the technology industry. While I’m truly honored to have made M&C’s list among extraordinary women in the meetings industry, this honor is a reflection of our entire team.”
Chupka began her career at CEA in 1989, and left briefly in 1998 to work for GartnerGroup before returning as vice president, events and conferences in 1999. She was promoted to senior vice president in 2006 and under her leadership, CES has grown to become the largest global hands-on showcase of emerging innovation, serving as an inspiration to the greater exhibition and events industry. The 2015 CES wrapped as the largest show in history with more than 2.2 million net square feet of exhibit space – up 100 percent from the 1.1 million net square feet at the 2000 CES. More than 170,000 attendees convened at the 2015 CES, up 39 percent from the 120,000 attendees at the 2000 CES. Additionally, 6,952 media attended the show to report on the latest consumer technologies and trends, resulting in more than 950 million media impressions. CES also had a solid presence on social media with more than 750,000 mentions of #CES2015 during the four days of the show and 7.51 billion total potential Twitter impressions, which is nearly the world’s population. CES has been named as the largest annual North American tradeshow by Tradeshow Executive Magazine and Tradeshow Week since 2001.
During her 26 year tenure with CEA, Chupka has held numerous roles including vice-president, business development; director of industry relations and education; and director of marketing for CES.
CES 2016 returns to Las Vegas, Nevada, Wednesday, January 6-Saturday, January 9, 2016. For more information, visit www.CESweb.org.
