New York City FC defender Angelino was voted by fans as the 2014-15 Manchester City FC Elite Development Squad Player of the Year, it was announced today as Manchester City held their third annual season launch party in anticipation of the 2015-16 Premier League campaign starting this weekend.
The 18-year-old Spanish left back, who joined New York City FC on June 16, is on a season-long loan with the Major League Soccer side. Defender Pablo Maffeo came in second, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn finished in third among those up for the award as Manchester City's top Under-21 player.
Angelino made his professional debut coming on at halftime of New York City FC's 4-4 draw with Toronto FC on July 12 at Yankee Stadium. Angelino has started the last three matches for the Club.
Midfielder Frank Lampard presented Angelino with the award.
"I've been privileged to play with many fantastic young players, some who have turned into international stars, legends and great club players," Lampard said. "Last year training at Man City there were many bright talents and Angelino was one of the brightest ones of them all. He trained with us regularly and didn’t look out of place. I think he’s going to have a fantastic career in the game. We’re lucky to have him here in New York and it will be great for him to improve his career by playing first-team football. A thoroughly deserved award to Angelino."
Angelino, who made his EDS debut prior to his 17th birthday, was grateful for the honor.
"It means a lot," he said. "Thank you to the fans over there in Manchester who voted for me and thank you to all the staff who help me improve every day. I'm really happy to be here in New York learning from great players like Frank, (Andrea) Pirlo, (Andoni) Iraola and David (Villa)."
New York City FC return to action on Sunday evening against the Red Bulls. Kickoff is 7 p.m. ET from Red Bull Arena (FOX Sports 1, WFAN, WADO).
