The National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) and the National Hockey League (NHL®) announced today the appointment of Edmonton Oilers President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Peter Chiarelli and Chicago Blackhawks Vice President and General Manager Stan Bowman as managers of Team North America for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

Chiarelli and Bowman will select the playing roster, coaching and support staff and subsequently oversee all tournament preparations and management for Team North America, comprised of the top players from Canada and the United States who are 23 or under as of Oct. 1, 2016. Players who meet these criteria will be available for selection exclusively by Team North America.

Chiarelli brings experience in international hockey to the post, having served as a member of the management group for Hockey Canada’s National Men’s Team at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, where Canada won gold, and for the 2013 IIHF World Hockey Championships.

Chiarelli joined the Oilers in April after serving as the General Manager of the Boston Bruins for eight seasons. He guided the Bruins to the Stanley Cup® Final twice during his tenure in Boston, including winning the Stanley Cup in 2011.

The Nepean, Ont., native graduated from Harvard University with an Economics degree in 1987 and played for the Harvard men’s hockey team from 1983-87. He began his career in hockey after graduating with a law degree from the University of Ottawa and was hired as the Director of Legal Relations for the Ottawa Senators in 2000. In 2005, Chiarelli was promoted to Assistant General Manager of the Senators and he served in that role for one season, before being hired by the Bruins in 2006.

Bowman is entering his 15th season with the Stanley Cup®-champion Blackhawks and his seventh as General Manager, having been named the ninth GM in franchise history in July 2009. He has guided the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup® Championships in the past six seasons (2010, 2013 and 2015). In 2010, Bowman became the youngest GM in NHL history to guide an organization to the championship, as the team ended a 49-year title drought.

Bowman joined the Blackhawks in 2000 and served for four seasons as Special Assistant to the General Manager before being promoted to Director of Hockey Operations, a role he served in for two years (2005-07).

The Montreal native graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1995 with degrees in finance and computer applications. He and his father, Blackhawks Senior Advisor to Hockey Operations Scotty Bowman, are just the 10th father-son GM tandem in the history of the NHL and just the fourth pair to have their names inscribed on the Stanley Cup.

The World Cup of Hockey returns in September 2016 in Toronto, where eight teams, comprised of the world’s best hockey players, will compete for a best-on-best international hockey championship. The World Cup of Hockey is a joint effort of the NHLPA and the NHL, in cooperation with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It is expected that more than 150 of the best players in the NHL will participate in this tournament.
