New York City FC host Toronto FC on Wednesday night with a vital three points up for grabs as the race for the Major League Soccer playoffs heats up.
Kickoff between the Eastern Conference opponents is 7:30 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.
The match will be broadcast nationally on ESPN2 and on radio at 570 AM and WQBU.
New York City FC enter the third and final regular-season installment against Toronto FC seated in ninth place in the Eastern Conference at 7-14-7 (28 points). The Club is coming off a 2-1 defeat to FC Dallas on Saturday at Toyota Stadium. New York City FC are striving to snap a three-match losing streak and four-match winless skid.
Toronto FC (11-12-4) are above the playoff line, sitting fifth with 37 points. They take to the field following a 3-1 loss to the New England Revolution on Sunday. Toronto FC was unable to capitalize despite holding advantages in shots (21-7), corners (8-2), crosses (34-8), total passes (493-351) and possession (59.8%) over the reigning Eastern Conference Champions.
Wednesday is the third meeting between New York City FC and Toronto FC.
New York City FC won the first match 2-0 on June 20 at BMO Field with a pair of goals by captainDavid Villa. The teams played to a dramatic 4-4 draw on July 12 at Yankee Stadium where Patrick Mullins’ goal in the 84th minute equalized and split the day’s spoils.
Villa, who leads the Club with 15 goals and is tied for third in MLS, is questionable on Wednesday evening after leaving Saturday’s match at FC Dallas with a hamstring injury. Spain’s all-time leading scorer has found the back of the net five times in the last eight matches.
Mullins, who replaced Villa at halftime in Frisco, Texas, scored the fifth goal of his sophomore campaign in MLS and his first since July 12 in the 70th minute of the defeat.
New York City FC will rely on decorated midfielders Frank Lampard and Andrea Pirlo in the middle of the park as well.
Toronto FC are led by a forwards Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore and midfielder Michael Bradley. Giovinco is the only player in the league with both double-digit goals (17) and assists (13). The Italian is second in MLS in goals, third in assists and tops in shots (146) and tied for first with Villa in shots on goal (57).
Altidore, a United States international, has 10 goals, while U.S. captain Bradley has four goals and six assists for his club.
Toronto FC are expected to be bolstered by the return of midfielders Benoit Cheyrou (six assists), who returns from injury, and Collen Warner, who returns from suspension.
If New York City FC want to follow in Seattle’s footsteps and become just the second true MLS expansion club to qualify for the playoffs in their inaugural season, three points are a must on Wednesday against Toronto FC.
