EAT CHICAGO STYLE!
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we know Emmett Burke! His namesake venue downtown is dedicated to excellence in Chicago-style food, and as the world gears up for the beginning of the NHL season, it's high time you visited him and his amazing deep-dish pizza to celebrate the latest and greatest Stanley Cup by the Chicago Blackhawks. If you follow Peachy on Instagram and are an avid reader of NHL Peachy, you know she made the Stanley Cup in Pottery Class. Her Stanley Cup has never been on a review and it made its debut on this one!
Emmett's was first featured in 2014:
We were absolutely delighted with the pizza and the experience, and could not wait to return for a formal review. Emmett met and exceeded our expectations with his engaging personality, super cuisine, upbeat atmosphere with a stellar crowd and of course, the amazing antiques that punctuate the space thoughtfully, each selected by Emmett himself. We abhor cookie-cutter experiences and this is the furthest thing from that! Open since November 2013, Emmett's does not accept reservations so you must be patient for the top-quality casual Chicago-style cuisine. If you are familiar with Chicago, we understand that Emmett's evokes an old-fashioned feeling reminiscent of The Drake Hotel over Lake Shore Drive. Every aspect of your Emmett's experience, though casual, is thoughtfully executed with care. You'll feel like you're at Emmett's house.
(Note from the Editor: At Whom You Know, you know we love the Blackhawks because of the coaches Joel Quenneville and Kevin Dineen. If you are reading you know where to eat dinner when you play the Rangers now...)
Emmett's has an assortment of 35 wines, each hand-picked to be in the esteemed collection. The one that jumped out at Peachy Deegan was the Barbera D'Asti Cascina Garitina 2013, Piedmonte, Italy. Its robust deep qualities were exactly what she was looking for, and she was happy with this throughout the spectacular evening. The collection has a wide array of choices and there is a wine for everyone and every dish.
We are advocates of eating your vegetables as well as drinking your wine, and we applaud Emmett's for offering four salad choices. Peachy chose the Caesar, which was exactly what you'd want it to be. Romaine, croutons, grated parmesean, and dressing made on premises are perfect to go with any pizza or sandwich at Emmett's.
The menu at Emmett's is not extensive, but everything is of top quality and delicious, and has earned its spot. Did you know that Emmett Burke is a Fordham graduate and he wrote a business plan to do this restaurant back in his sophomore year? As restaurants evolve we look to see how they differentiate themselves to be on the cutting edge of the competitive culinary world of Manhattan. Emmett's latest and greatest dish is the Italian Beef sandwich, which we were delighted to try. It's very popular in Chicago.
It is enormous! We believe this will be uber-popular as we head into winter, and you will revel in this roast beef, oh-so-juicy in succulent gravy. Pickled vegetables come to the party on a grinder roll to enhance the overall flavor, and even their fries are terrific.
Our esteemed panelist adds:
This is really good pizza. It should be eaten with one of Emmett's own large salads, just for the palate cleansing. I chose Greek: Tomato, cucumber, red onion, kalamata olive, feta cheese, peppers and vinaigrette.
But really, it's all about the Chicago-style deeeeeeep dish pizza. Made to order, with meat toppings, vegetable toppings, and different sizes available.
It's not just the secret sauce. Or the hush-hush combination of four delectable cheeses. So good. There's a delightful crispiness to the crust, but just on the outside.
We didn't inquire about the crust recipe, but the blend of crust, cheese, and sauce is really well-balanced. That little tang you experience on your tongue with every bite welcomes a sip of the Sangiovese we had with our meal. Emmett himself, world-traveler he, chooses his wines with care.
This 2011 Querciavalle Vigna Della Capanna is a bountiful Tuscan. Dry, just dry enough, and not too fruity for the pizza experience. Emmet's stocks a panoply of beers, locals, Europeans, so the bar or the "porch" invites an after-work visit if only to quench the effects of the daily grind. One gentleman, while we were enjoying the evening, came in, ordered a pie to go, a glass of wine while he waited, and then went cheerfully on his way when dinner was ready. Emmett's may have single-handedly put the "neighborhood" back into this corner of Manhattan.
Just a quick aside: Emmett has been planning his restaurant for years, so his collection of antiques and vintage was amassed along the way. The atmosphere, while busy, is part of the charm, both of the restaurant and of its owner. No reservations are accepted, so belly up to the bar, boys, and wait your turn. You'll be doing yourself a favor.
