The New York Landmarks Conservancy Presents: Tourist In Your Own Town #8: Manhattan Bridge
Revisit the Manhattan Bridge. Completed in 1912, the Manhattan Bridge is a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. This suspension bridge crosses the East River, connecting Manhattan with Brooklyn. On the Manhattan side it has a beautiful arch and colonnade at Canal Street that was designed by Carrére & Hastings in 1910-1915 during the "City Beautiful" movement. The monumental gateway arch and colonnade entrance was designated a City Landmark in 1975. Its design includes pylon carvings by Carl Heber and a buffalo hunt frieze by Charles Rumsey.
Drive, walk, or bike the bridge
Besides the obvious drive across, you can walk or bike the Manhattan Bridge using one of its two separate pathways. From the bridge you get sweeping views of Lower Manhattan and the East River. Click here for a map (bikes use the North Path).
