The Articulate Gallery is Recommended by Whom You Know.
The Articulate Gallery is a multi-award winning range of slot-sided picture frames especially for the display of 2D and 3D children’s artwork. It takes the children’s pictures off the fridge door and places them in their rightful place in a frame on the wall in an instant. The children gain a sense of achievement when they see their artwork properly showcased which helps build confidence. Confident and creative learning are vital parts of a child’s development. These frames make a great gift for any family member. Unlike most other children’s products, the kids don’t grow out of them very quickly. The frames allow easy rotation of the art. Since they are less expensive than conventional framing, they enable and encourage creativity in children. The frames come in 9x12” Single, Double, Triple format. The frames were designed and developed by a husband and wife team who saw that children’s art should be celebrated and displayed like a proper artist’s. As Pablo Picasso said, ‘every child is an artist’ so every family should have an Articulate Gallery.
History of Articulate as told by Colin:
Articulate is a family-owned and run business, based on the south side of Glasgow, Scotland. We designed and produce a range of slot-sided picture frames to allow creative kids to proudly display their artistic endeavours. There is me, Colin (dad), Eona (mum), Todd and Murray (10 and 8 years old respectively) and Digger (our 13 year old Jack Russell). We are noisy, red-headed and funny.
The idea for these really simple picture frames came about as a result of mum Eona’s frustration with ‘fridge door’ art. Simply sticking the mini masterpieces created by her then two year old son onto kitchen appliances seemed inappropriate. Instead, she had the idea for the frame to celebrate children’s creativity in a way that is fun as well as functional.
Eona has a degree in drama and a MA in education so she fully understands the importance of art and promoting creativity in early years and how that helps children’s development. Eona has won a few awards recently as she works in art education. I ran a 150-year-old construction business and diversified into joinery manufacture, designing and manufacturing high quality bespoke hardwood products before taking the opportunity that The Articulate Gallery presented. I also have a university degree in Construction.
With my background in design, I designed the frame, developed the prototype and the product myself and have brought it to market. The product once designed was protected. Like so many other products, we picked and packed the first 2000 units or so on the kitchen table. I then sought less expensive manufacture overseas as I thought the product would do well in retail given the right pricing.
We successfully negotiated the fearsome Dragons in their Den on BBC2 and then I conquered Habitat on “Britain's Next Big Thing” with this little frame that does something so simple yet meaningful in such an effective way. Dragon’s Den was the forerunner to the US’s “Shark Tank”, Britain’s Next Big Thing was another TV show which followed shortly after. The product has been seen on a few TV shows in the UK to date and we hope many more.
I launched the product onto the UK retail market in 2010 and was met with a deal of enthusiasm and success. The product is now sold across Europe and last year I thought the US was next on the list so launched at NYNow trade show in August 2014. I set up a US trading company and opened a distribution centre in NJ. Again the product has met with a deal of success and can be found in stores such as Nordstrom, Amazon and Pottery Barn Kids to name but a few.
The company and The Articulate Gallery have won a number of awards and continues to do so.
Articulate (Scotland) Limited is a member of the Giftware Association, the British Jewellery and Giftware Federation, the British Jewellery and Giftware International, ACID (Anti Copying In Design) and the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce. The product is design registered and protected by a patent.
