The horses are Peachy Deegan's favorite New York animal!
Read about them in Peachy's Pet Pals!
We've reviewed a lot of TV shows, but Animals is one of the freshest concepts we've ever seen and we applaud it for its pure innovation! Not since the debut of South Park has a cartoon for adults come out that we believe will be as successful. This is definitely NOT for kids. And if you think you're too old for cartoons, you're wrong!
It is a stretch to feel a familial connection with rats, until you see the work of the Duplass Brothers in this show. Conversational rats?!? Yes, they've made it on the small screen in two episodes we've seen. Somehow, they are far cuter than the repulsive guy who opens the first episode, and their characters and personalities are striking. We think maybe they live in Brooklyn...and by the way, we think the people behind this show are probably considering all five boroughs. (As you know, we consider only Manhattan.)
The writers are brilliant, and they really get in the heads of these animals and personify them to the maximum degree. All with any sense of humor will find this highly entertaining, just like Whitney Cumming's amazing upcoming show. The voices are terrific, but we would have considered different artists. We want to see a warmer, happier New York because that is the way we see it-we would make Animals far less dark. Of these five episodes, the Dogs was the best by far- OSCAR there is even a pug in there for you (meet Oscar's sisters, Wishbone and Emma). Everyone knows we love the dogs (as long as they stay far away from our shoes and are clean and behaved like Oscar.)
More reasons to watch
*You've never seen rat social anxiety before, and it's funny-the second rats was better because of the fashion influence
*Pigeons give you insight into NYC life and you'll hear pigeon pep talks
*Chelsea Piers is included right down to the golf balls
*There's a yucky mayor (definitely NOT Giuliani or Bloomberg or our personal favorite, Mover and Shaker Ed Koch and we know you are reading up there!)
*Exaggeration of stereotypes is terribly amusing
*The Canadian Geese in Central Park are simply smashing
*We've never seen cats so naughty!
We really hope to see the Central Park Horses get their own episode! They deserve it. The PDNY (real letters switched around on this show) Horses can be on it but it should be owned by the Horses that Pull the Carriages with grace and style.
Episodes 1-5 of Animals on HBO are Recommended by Whom You Know.

Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano met while working together at a New York City production company, where they would do voices for the pigeons outside of their office. Phil, an illustrator in his free time, proposed animating a scene based off their pigeon-riffing to screen at Mike’s monthly comedy show.
Thus was born a series of animated shorts, simply dubbed “Animals.”. The series quickly became a full-time passion project, screening in venues throughout NYC, as well as at festivals around the country. After winning Best Comedy at the 2013 New York Television Festival, the duo gained the attention of executive producers Jay and Mark Duplass, who convinced them to quit their jobs and move across the country to begin making ten half-hour episodes independent of any studio or network.
One year later, the inaugural two episodes premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival – the first independently produced TV series to do so – which led to acclaim in the New York Times and Los Angeles Times, and a two-season pickup by HBO.
The animation for ANIMALS. was created with Starburns Industries, the studio known for “Rick & Morty” and Charlie Kaufman’s new stop-motion film “Anomalisa.”
ANIMALS. is part of the continuing relationship between HBO and Jay & Mark Duplass, whose acclaimed show “Togetherness,” also produced by Duplass Brothers Television, returns for its second seasonSunday, Feb. 21 (10:30-11:00 p.m.).
The executive producers of ANIMALS. are Jay Duplass & Mark Duplass; directors/writers, Phil Matarese & Mike Luciano; producers, Jen Roskind, James Fino, Joe Russo II, Kenny Micka.
