The diversity of topic in Vice by HBO is vast, spanning the three episodes we watched. All should be able to agree the content is jolting and the hard news aspect that fuels it will really make you think, no matter where you stand on the political spectrum. However, we would have liked to have seen more diversity of opinion and more viewpoints presented.
Episode One opens with Boko Haram, a group that we hope never comes to the USA! Their horrific atrocities against humanity, especially towards women are shocking. We won't lie: these episodes are difficult to watch and you might not be able to sleep afterwards (so then just watch Jimmy and James as in Fallon and Corden). The second part of this episode on genetics we found highly fascinating. Did you know it is possible to pick the sex and eye color of your child? They believe they'll be able to influence height in five years.
In general, these episodes are informative and eye-opening and definitely look at the topics covered in a different way compared to the evening news. They go undercover to get the real stories and that takes real bravery. A lot of research must have gone into getting the right parties to interview that wanted to share their story as well. The increasing danger and suffering is traumatic in the Syrian refugee crisis and it should make you even more thankful to be an American and appreciate all that the founding people did for our country. Notre Dame in Paris is shown soon after their recent terrorist attack. John Miller for NYPD had the best commentary among the episodes.
Of the three, the most troubling to us was the third on mercy killing, a highly controversial topic. We found it entirely freaky and hope we never have to experience it however, we believe in terminal illnesses where one deteriorates, people should have the right to do what they want and free choice in America is essential, limiting government involvement in our personal lives. It's interesting to learn how other countries like the Netherlands address this issue.

“Boko Haram”: The terrorist group Boko Haram is responsible for thousands of deaths in Nigeria. Now, the government is determined to drive these militants from the country. Many are heading to the safety and relative prosperity of Europe, but getting there is a long, life-threatening journey. New VICE correspondent Ahmed Shihab-Eldin follows the refugee trail from the Syrian border to Europe, meeting Syrians determined to find a better life.
“Cycle of Terror”: The bloody ISIS attacks in Paris stunned the world. And as rumors circulated that one of the attackers may have posed as a Syrian migrant, politicians in Western countries, including the U.S., raced to declare their territory off-limits to refugees from countries like Syria and Iraq. Gianna Toboni travels to France and around the U.S. to see how the global reaction to the violence in Paris is affecting the fight against terrorism.

HBO2 playdate: Feb. 24 (12:15 a.m.)
“Right to Die”: When California enacted the End of Life Option Act amid fierce debate last October, the number of terminally ill Americans with the right to a doctor-assisted death effectively quadrupled. But in parts of Europe, euthanasia is also administered to people other than the terminally ill, including those with autism, depression and personality disorders. VICE explores the moral, political and personal questions raised by how and when we end our lives.
The series is also available on HBO NOW, HBO GO and HBO On Demand.
