The Nashville Predators®, National Hockey League (NHL), and League partner McDonald’s unveiled 30,000-square feet of renovated space at the Nashville Inner City Ministry (NICM) as part of the 2016 NHL® All-Star Legacy Family Life Center. The NICM is a community outreach center dedicated to empowering at-risk youth through educational and vocational programs, including mentoring, tutoring, and training programs. The center services more than 4,000 youth and their families each year in the Nashville area.
As a legacy to the 2016 NHL All-Star, one-third of the 90,000-square foot facility was renovated to better service the community 24/7. The initiative helped bring to life the large space through the donation of new furniture, technology, and interior design featuring NHL All-Star and Nashville Predators branding. In total, eight rooms were transformed: the pantry, with shelves filled thanks to assistance from League partner McDonald’s as well as Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee; two classrooms with new furniture, smartboards, and storage areas; the laundry room was fitted with new washers and dryers; renovations in both the men’s and women’s bathroom and locker room area; a newly furnished reception area; and a fully furnished nursery, contributed by the wives and girlfriends of the Nashville Predators in partnership with the Teammates for Kids Foundation. NHL partner Franklin Sports also donated sets of street hockey equipment.
“We’re pleased that the 2016 NHL All-Star Legacy initiative will help the Nashville Inner City Ministry continue to have a positive impact in the community,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "The NHL family collaborated with the Predators, the Predators' Foundation, Teammates for Kids and contributing sponsors to help the excitement and good feelings of All-Star Weekend remain alive long-term through the facilities that are being created at the Nashville Inner City Ministry."
“Part of a professional sports team’s role in a city, aside from earnestly pursuing championships, is to be a good neighbor in its community,” said Tom Cigarran, Chairman and Governor, Nashville Predators. “Over the years, this has been a strong focus for the Nashville Predators. We have worked hard with local leaders and organizations to identify areas where we can lend our voice and resources to help solve problems. Today, we continue that humbling work with the NHL and the local business community by opening this facility. This new space will provide at-risk youth in Nashville with a safe area to gather and will have a strong positive impact in Nashville for generations.”
2016 NHL All-Star players Roman Josi (Nashville Predators), Daniel Sedin (Vancouver Canucks), and Dustin Byfuglien (Winnipeg Jets), as well as NHL Alumni™ J.P. Dumont and Stu Grimson were on-site to welcome the local community to their new facility.
The Legacy Initiative is an ongoing philanthropic endeavor in which the League, the local Club, and League partners support community organizations in the host city of an NHL Event.
