It has been our experience that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment secures the best from outside the USA and distributes it here, and we've been pleased to work with them for years. Their latest and greatest makes its American debut in a week. For all those that have an appreciation of history, Labyrinth of Lies will capture you, especially if you have an interest in World War Two in Europe. Labyrinth of Lies will also intrigue the legal eagles among you.
It opens in Frankfurt, 1958 with a young prosecutor practicing the fascinating enforcement of traffic violations. He ultimately meets a challenge that is far less plain vanilla. Dusty stacks of papers and prehistoric research methods reminded us of the dreaded term paper, which in fact was much, much better than the dreaded exam. If you can remember the card catalogs of index cards, the sense of nostalgia in research of documents will bring you back to a pre-internet age. (But don't stay there too long: we've got 20,000 other posts for you to read. Almost.) There are moral dilemmas that emerge and if you have a proper sense of right and wrong and a commitment to justice, you will want to see this tale on your own screen. Actions have consequences, or do they? And if they don't, should they?
We admire the urgent persistence that is characteristic of this drama; are people's addresses the same? Are they still alive? The razor-sharp focus only adds to the plot sucking you in. You have to admire people that try to accomplish the impossible.
We also commend the pure bravery of those that are willing to stand up for what is right, despite the literal throwing of stones! Money vs. Justice will provide for beaucoup de discussion among the viewers, which is still of relevance today.
This movie will open old wounds for those that are close to what had happened, and if you're Peachy's age (ish) and lucky enough to still have your grandparents, you should watch this with them. This movie deals with heavy topics including survivor's guilt and the gravity of what really went on in Auschwitz.
Though hard-hitting, overall Labyrinth of Lies is brilliantly haunting. It will move you.
We loved the charm of an era gone by that has successfully translated to scripts time and time again: Labyrinth of Lies is Recommended by Whom You Know and best of luck to this movie in the Oscars! We will count how many we reviewed win...

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is pleased to announce the Blu-ray™, DVD and Digital release of LABYRINTH OF LIES on February 16. Germany’s Academy Award® entry for Best Foreign Language Film, LABYRINTH OF LIES is Giulio Ricciarelli’s feature film debut as director. The script, which Ricciarelli co-wrote with Elisabeth Bartel, illuminates a relatively obscure chapter of German history, when thousands of former Nazis simply returned to their everyday lives and their crimes remained unpunished and largely forgotten. This Sony Pictures Classics film, which had its world premiere at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival, stars Alexander Fehling (Inglorious Bastards, TV’s Homeland) and features the last film performance by legendary German actor Gert Voss. Blu-ray and DVD special features on LABYRINTH OF LIES include a commentary track with Ricciarelli and Fehling, an interview with Ricciarelli and Fehling at the Jewish Film Festival and deleted scenes.
Synopsis
Germany 1958. In those years, "Auschwitz" was a word that some people had never heard of, and others wanted to forget as quickly as possible. Against the will of his immediate superior, young prosecutor Johann Radmann (Alexander Fehling) begins to examine the case of a recently identified teacher who was a former Auschwitz guard. Radmann soon lands in a web of repression and denial, but also of idealization. He devotes himself with utmost commitment to his new task and is resolved to find out what really happened. He oversteps boundaries, falls out with friends, colleagues and allies, and is sucked deeper and deeper into a labyrinth of lies and guilt in his search for the truth. But what he ultimately brings to light will change the country forever.
