"John Chilton was truly gifted, both as a jazz musician and writer. John authored numerous jazz biographies including those of Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Coleman Hawkins. His Who's Who Of Jazz has been called essential reading for jazz fans around the world. Along with Richard M. Sudhalter, John won the Best Album Notes GRAMMY® Award for 1982 for their work on Bunny Berigan’s Giants Of Jazz.Additionally, John was the musical partner of George Melly, one of Britain’s greatest jazz stars, for more than 40 years. We have lost a cherished artist and our sincerest condolences go out to John’s family, friends, and collaborators."
