In the realm of foreign films, Sony always impresses us and even expands our horizons: Coming Home is the one and only movie we have ever reviewed in Mandarin Chinese!  Once upon a time, Peachy was a student at Boston College where she graduated with a degree in history and took a class on 20th Century China, where we were shocked by the absurdity of the Cultural Revolution, taught to us by a Chinese Professor.

After Coming Home came to a conclusion, we watched the TIFF feature with the director, which we would suggest you watch prior to seeing the movie rather than after it's over.  The director,
Zhang Yimou, came of age during the Cultural Revolution-he was ages 16-26 then so it was formative in his life and we applaud the fact that he is an expert on the topic of the movie, because he lived it.  People should direct on what they know.  Coming Home is adapted from a novel and sadly, because of censorship in China, he was not allowed to use all of the novel.  We definitely wonder what he would have done in the movie had he had the freedoms we enjoy here in America.

Coming Home is a transformative tale of a family that has suffered greatly from the oppression of their government, and it is jolting to see the effects this can have on personality of the citizens over the years: traumatic circumstances and government control make this practically a horror movie for us, however, the character development of the father, mother and daughter triumph over the overbearing restrictions.

The movie was well-cast and evoked all that we would have imagined about China.  Memory, love and of course Chinese culture play large roles in the film thematically.  The piano scene late in the film was absolutely the best part.

A highly emotionally charged tale, Coming Home is thought-provoking and a terrific study of how political movements can so greatly affect families and private lives.
