Gorgeous Gifts for Mr. and Ms. Impossible to Shop For: Introducing Pebblechild by Pebble, made by non-profit Hathay Bunano! Designed in the UK, Produced in Bangladesh, Recommended by Whom You Know for the World!
Every Monday should have an octopus waving at you!
Most octopuses we feature are in the appetizer section of one of our culinary reviews, so this is a fantastic departure. You're going to want to hug this one...meet our new friend.
It always makes us laugh when a brand tells us since they are not in Manhattan they shouldn't be considered; we do not feature brands that think that way. We are constantly looking for smart entrepreneurs that are forward-thinking. The internet has made the world available to the world, and we love it! The brilliant Samantha Morshed, a highly sophisticated fellow former finance professional whom we have yet to meet in person, tells us that s
ocial enterprise is about creating social impact through business and Pebble is a perfect example of this.
At Whom You Know, we concur. Business can be a force for good in the world and we can all bring about change by being conscious consumers. Though excellence is our main goal at Whom You Know, when we can also do good through excellence, it is even better.
Pebble is Samantha's brand and her idea.
Pebble toys are handmade by the very talented artisans at Hathay Bunano. Hathay Bunano is a non profit organisation in Bangladesh and is a guaranteed member of the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO). As such all the toys can, from the start of 2016, carry the WFTO guaranteed fair trade label which ensures that fair trade is throughout the supply chain.
We understand that Hathay Bunano aims to create fairly paid, good quality, local and flexible employment for women who are disadvantaged, marginalised and often illiterate. It takes work to remote rural locations in Bangladesh where there is little opportunity. The artisans who make the toys are then able to send their children to school, save for emergencies, improve their homes and have better nutrition.
Pebble toys out smiles on faces worldwide. Through their cute design, these toys evoke smiles from all when people are introduced to them. The toys are engaging, safe and well-designed and able to bring a bit smile to the faces of young ones. The intelligent gift-giver smiles because they knows that they have bought a toy the baby loves, and also because they know that with their ethical purchasing, they are helping communities in remote Bangladesh. The artisan who makes the toy smiles because she knows through this work she is better able to provide for her family. A win-win situation all around we'd say!
Look at this super cute octopus!

Rainbow bunny rattle – multi
Lovely rainbow bunny rattle. Perfect for little hands with lots of bits to grab and perfect for learning colors. Bright and colorful and bound to become a firm favorite with your little one!
Chicken rattle
What’s not to love about our rattling chirpy chirpy cheep chick? Hand-knitted in 100% cotton yarn, he has a bright apple green body and a lovely orange comb on top of his head that’s just right for little hands to grab.
Donut rattle - pink with multi sprinkles
They've been making donut rattles for some years and they are as popular now as when they first invented them. Deserving of tribute. Jo Hanley volunteered with this brand in the very early days of Hathay Bunano in Dhaka, teaching knitting and finishing techniques and making new patterns. Only when she came to making the pattern for the donut did she realize that there was a lot of mathematics in knitting. The donuts are probably a little bigger than lifesize but are lovely and soft and squidgy and perfect for little hands to grab and shake.
Rattle Pirate
Ahoy there, shipmate! Meet the friendly pirate rattle. The perfect companion for little land-lubbers, his stripey, red shirt and swashbuckling hat are all hand-crocheted in a soft, cotton yarn. Sure to warm the cockles of everyone’s heart, land-lubbers and sea-farers alike will love this little toy.
Large animals – donkey
Some donkeys have a reputation for being a little bit grumpy (Eeyore, we're talking to you!)... Not this one, though - he has a real twinkle in his eyes and a cheerful smiling face. And with his multi-coloured stripes, large floppy ears and bright green tufted mane, he’s full of character and fun.
Non-profits in the USA are designated by 501c3. This brand is not American; it is registered in Bangladesh as a non profit society. It has a board and a membership where the artisans form the majority of the membership. There is no 501c3 registration in Bangladesh. Whilst it is a non profit, it is set up to be sustainable and commercially viable. Any profit that is made is then put back into the communities in various ways like setting up and running preschools and distributing blankets during the winter months.
