The National Hockey League Alumni Association's Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Mark Napier, Executive Director effective at the end of his term on December 31, 2016. “Mark has been such a tremendous asset to the organization over his 12 year tenure. He will be missed with the NHL Alumni, but the Board and Staff will continue to grow the organization in the positive steps and relationships that he has entrusted us with and strongly built. I know each of you has had the opportunity to work with Mark and would agree that he is a “first class” guy in every way and has represented the NHL Alumni Association in the same genuine character,” said Mike Pelyk, NHL Alumni Chairman.
When Mark assumed the role 12 years ago, and with the unwavering support of Wendy McCreary, the NHL Alumni Association has been able to grow this office of two people to a staff of six dedicated employees. From its humble beginnings in November 1999 and with $600,000 in seed money donated from the NHL and NHLPA, the organization has come a long way.
Over Mark’s tenure, the NHL Alumni with the generous support of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association sees $6,000,000 go out annually for our Senior Gratuitous Payment Program to 443 former players and widows, and $72,000 per year in scholarship money directed to children and grandchildren of our members to help further their education. The BreakAway Career Transition Program has helped hundreds of former players transition from the game.
The NHL Alumni has grown the Pro-am Hockey Tournament from a single event in Toronto 11 years ago to include four other Canadian cities as well as Boston, raising over $40,000,000 for charity to date. The annual NHL Alumni Awards Gala Dinner honours its “Man of the Year” and brings the entire hockey community together. Past recipients include Ted Lindsay, Jean Beliveau, Gordie Howe, Johnny Bower, Andy Bathgate, Rod Gilbert, Al Arbour, Bobby Hull, Guy Lafleur, Lanny McDonald, Brad Park, Pat Quinn, Bryan Trottier and last year’s recipient Mark Messier.
NHL Alumni members have offered their time to visit troops in Afghanistan, support music and reading programs for school children and visit communities in the Arctic. The organization has raised millions for numerous grass roots charities through its player appearance and philanthropic support.
The NHL Alumni has shown the world that its membership is very special !
