ORACLE Team USA Skipper Jimmy Spithill is back in Bermuda, pushing forward on his rehab following an operation on his left elbow last week. The procedure was to repair a damaged tendon.
“It’s very similar to tennis elbow,” Spithill said. “It’s been a problem for me for about six months now and we tried to deal with it with physiotherapy and cortisone shots, but with no real improvement, surgery seemed the best option.”
The procedure was performed by Dr. Robert S. Bray, Jr and Dr. Andrew Bulczynski of DISC Sports & Spine Center in Marina del Rey, California, who also performed surgery on Spithill’s right elbow following the 2013 America’s Cup.
“Considering the incredible physiological strains placed on the athlete by such high-performance boats, it’s amazing that Jimmy was able to perform at an elite level despite his torn tendons. Now, with both elbows repaired, he will come back even stronger,” said Dr. Bray.
With a robust history of treating elite athletes and returning them to sport, DISC (also the official medical services provider for Red Bull) was the natural choice to see to Spithill’s care.
“This was a very straightforward procedure, so the rehab period should be quick,” he says.
With the rest of the team off until August 11 for annual leave, Spithill has returned to Bermuda to start the recovery process.
The AC45S boats the team uses for testing and training in Bermuda use a steering wheel and are therefore slightly less physically taxing on the helmsman compared to the AC45F catamarans, which use tillers and top-winches and are the boats raced on the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series circuit.
Spithill says he expects to be able to train with the team on the AC45S boats later this month and be ready for racing at the next stop on the Louis Vuitton America's Cup World Series in Toulon, France in September.
