The Consumer Technology Association™ (CTA) brought together members of the consumer technology, medical and regulatory communities at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a Digital Health Technology Expo exploring the future of technology in healthcare.

Innovators including Adidas, Fitbit, Qualcomm Life, Samsung and Under Armour demonstrated their health-related technologies for FDA staff at the event. The Expo began with keynote remarks from Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CTA and opening remarks from Bakul Patel, associate director of Digital Health, FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).

"Events such as CTA's Digital Health Technology Expo allow the public and private sectors to share critical information about health and fitness technology that empowers consumers, reduces costs and improves outcomes to change our lives for the better," said Shapiro. "The FDA's recent work has helped create an environment that fosters tech innovations in healthcare. We are pleased to partner with the agency, so these stakeholders can have the meaningful discussions we need to ensure technology continues to advance the healthcare sector."

The Expo included panel discussions with Suzannah Fox, CTO, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; FDA Commissioner Robert Califf, MD; and CDRH Director Jeff Shuren, as well as speakers from Singularity University, Sage Bionetworks, University of Massachusetts, Qualcomm Life, Humetrix and more. The panels addressed topics including how consumer technology is advancing healthcare and contributing to real world evidence in research.

"FDA staff had the chance to discuss and learn more about the future of consumer technology in healthcare, including how regulators and industry can prepare for the ever-changing landscape in digital health. At the FDA, we are committed to working with all of our stakeholders to promote innovation and protect patient safety," said Patel.
