Three sailors currently competing in the America’s Cup have been nominated for the prestigious World Sailor Of The Year Awards 2016. Emirates Team New Zealand’s Peter Burling and Blair Tuke and Land Rover BAR’s Giles Scott are among the nominees for the award which is given by World Sailing, the international governing body for the sport of sailing.
Burling and Tuke are the current holders of the award having tasted glory in 2015, and after yet more Olympic success in Rio, the pair will be strong favourites to retain their title. However, they face serious competition from all the other nominees, especially Great Britain’s Giles Scott who the Kiwi pair last faced in America’s Cup action at the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series Toulon and whose Olympic gold medal in Rio in the Finn class has helped him achieve his nomination in 2016.
The America’s Cup has a long and proud history with the award, with a number of America’s Cup legends enjoying award success in the past. From New Zealand, Sir Peter Blake won in 1994 and Sir Russell Coutts won in both 1995 and 2003. American Ed Baird, coach of the 1995 America's Cup winning Team New Zealand and a helmsman in 2007 for Alinghi, won in 2007.
Coming up to date, Sir Ben Ainslie, now leading Land Rover BAR, has won the award more times than any other sailor, enjoying success in 1998, 2002, 2008 and 2012, and ORACLE TEAM USA’s Tom Slingsby and Jimmy Spithill won in 2010 and 2014 respectively.
The awards ceremony will be held in Barcelona, Spain on November 8th, and then the three America’s Cup nominees will be back in action on the water in Japan at the final round of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series in Fukuoka from November 18 – 20.
