"Here at Oppa, we serve traditional Korean barbecue flavors in a new American style you can enjoy at Ganesvoort Market in our trendy new formats from rice bowls to burritos to chicken wings." -Peter Tondreau
Oppa is the gateway to Korean cuisine and we believe it is the first Korean cuisine feature ever on whomyouknow.com. It is an anchor of the new Ganesvoort Market and opened in July 2016. We were delighted to meet owner Peter Tondreau not only because of his clear commitment to quality cuisine and sparkling personality, but also because we believe he is the very first restaurant owner ever to have played hockey and be reviewed by us. Of course it helps you on the review if you are as fluent in hockey as you are in food. We have not published in NHL Peachy in a whole hour and we've been honored to work directly with the NHL for a few years; their season just started so this review is for them too as if you're going to be playing hockey professionally you should eat at a place that appreciates your talent. Peter played center in Chelsea Piers Division Two in New York.
First we tried the rice bowl with Bulgogi Beef; all meat is sourced from a Korean butcher in Flushing. Pickled carrots, romaine, cucumber and kimchi come to this party that gloriously revels around ribeye and scallions culminating in a colorful and delicious dish.
The next puck dropped so to speak was the Jeyuk Bokkeum Pork. It's spicy as the pork is marinated and has teamed up with a sesame leaf from Korea for a winning goal in your stomach.
Chicken wings with the house sauce of Buljang is another popular dish. Peter was born in South Korea: Seoul, so this cuisine is part of his heritage. Everything at Oppa is made from scratch, and the name means older brother. Peter is an older brother to a younger brother and sister (and she owns a beer company we hear)!
The Bulgogi Beef extends its talents to the salad bowl and radish, scallions, pickled carrots and cherry tomatoes also come to this lovely edible soiree. If you are a lover of salad dressing, you should know that gochujung vinaigrette goes with this.
Finally, we tried a Burrito with egg and ssamjng sauce, fermented brown bean pasta, and roasted garlic and chili. It combined for a really different flavor combination that we believe you should try too.
Oppa is Recommended by Whom You Know and there are other Peter pursuits we may feature; stay tuned!
