Six of the top collegiate sailors in the USA, along with three top coaches, came to a workshop at the ORACLE TEAM USA base in Bermuda last week. The program is one of the pillars of the AC Endeavour program.
While Hurricane Nicole put a dent in any sailing plans during the week, the students sill had a valuable learning experience with the team.
"I had this amazing opportunity to participate in the AC Endeavour program with ORACLE TEAM USA," said Samantha Steele, who sails for Stanford. "I’m a math major and I was fascinated by the engineering in the last Cup."
The college sailors participate in workshop sessions on fitness, design, boat-building, tactics, and what it takes to be in the America's Cup.
"We had a chance to meet some of the sailors, do some workouts and learn about how to get into America’s Cup," Steele said.
ORACLE TEAM USA tactician Andrew Campbell was a four-time All-American sailor at Stanford. He says he sees many connections between college sailing and an America's Cup team.
"In the US College environment, the facilities are excellent, the coaching is top-notch, you have a lot of team mates, so I think they would see a lot of similarities in that it's a high-level environment. They can see the connections between what we have here and what they do," Campbell said.
"Seeing the sailing team office, the boat-building shed, etc. it’s a bit like what they’re doing already, but scaled up and highly optimized."
