When teams begin competing in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers in Bermuda on May 26, 2017, they will be racing just off a purpose-built Event Village, overlooking the race course, with the finishing line just meters from spectator grandstands and hospitality.

Situated on the newly created Cross Island, at the entrance to the Royal Naval Dockyard, the America’s Cup Event Village will be a compact, purpose-built home for all Cup-related activities.

“When we selected Bermuda to host the 35th America’s Cup, one of the most compelling reasons was this concept for the Event Village and the race course,” said ORACLE TEAM USA skipper Jimmy Spithill.

“It’s an incredible opportunity to have all of the team bases together and integrated with the Event Village, within sight of the race course. It’s going to make the America’s Cup experience that much more intense for both the fans and for ourselves as teams.”

Already, three team bases are located along the mainland of the site, with ORACLE TEAM USA and SoftBank Team Japan fully operational and Land Rover BAR reaching an advanced stage of construction. The British team is expected to be operational before the end of the year.

Groupama Team France will be the fourth team situated on the mainland, between the Japanese and British bases. On the Cross Island site Emirates Team New Zealand and Artemis Racing will set up bases, as will the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup event.

“We’ve had the privilege of watching Cross Island literally rise out of the water across from our base over the course of the summer,” said SoftBank Team Japan skipper Dean Barker.

“It’s impressive to think about what it will be like here next summer and the scale of the event. Not just the six America’s Cup teams and the public areas, but there is also the Superyachts and the J-Class boats and the personalities that come along with that.

“In my experience, these events can kind of sneak up on you. As a sailor there’s always a time crunch as the first race approaches, then there’s the intensity of the competition and it can all go by very quickly. But I hope Bermuda and Bermudians enjoy the moment, because it’s shaping up to be a very exciting summer with an amazing atmosphere.”

Cross Island is an expansion of existing land, with the infill having now been completed on time and under budget. Next up is installation of services – water, sewage and telecommunications – before the new nine-acre site is handed over to the America’s Cup Event Authority to create the Event Village for the 35th America’s Cup.
