Sir Russell Coutts, CEO of the America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA) joined Bermuda’s Minister of Economic Development, The Hon. Dr. E Grant Gibbons, Peter Durhager, Chairman of the ACBDA, Ray Charlton, Chairman of WEDCO and Minister Craig Cannonier to celebrate a major milestone in one of Bermuda’s most visible commitments as host of the 35th America’s Cup, the completion of the first phase of construction of “Cross Island”, the land reclamation project that will be the home of the Event Village and a number of team bases in 2017.
In a single year, what was once water has been transformed into the stage upon which the America’s Cup Event Village, home to the 35th America’s Cup, will be situated. The team working on the project have achieved this major milestone on schedule and under budget, a significant achievement for all concerned.
Sir Russell gave a short speech, along with the other dignitaries from Bermuda, highlighting what a good partner Bermuda continues to be to the America’s Cup, and how this important event is yet further proof of the America’s Cup’s faith in Bermuda to stage the biggest and best America’s Cup event yet.
While the infill phase has been completed, the next part of the project involves installing the infrastructure, including electricity, water, sewage and telecommunications before the new nine-acres of land is handed over to the America’s Cup Event Authority, who will create the Event Village for the 35th America’s Cup.
