The very first race of the 35th America’s Cup is a classic USA vs France duel, bringing together the Defender ORACLE TEAM USA under the leadership of Skipper Jimmy Spithill, two-time winner of the America’s Cup, and France’s sailing hero Franck Cammas and his Groupama Team France crew.
Winner of the Jules Verne Trophy in 2010 and the Volvo Ocean Race in 2011 / 2012, Franck Cammas is hugely experienced and is clearly excited about the challenges, and opportunities, that lie ahead. “Going up against ORACLE TEAM USA, the Defender, in the opening round of the 35th America’s Cup, is a powerful symbol. In sporting terms it’s a fantastic challenge and in media terms it’s a great opportunity. Moreover, it’s important to note that on the first day, we’ll be racing against the two finalists in the last edition, ORACLE TEAM USA and Emirates Team New Zealand.
“Having a set schedule with the names of our adversaries for each of the duels in the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers is a key stage psychologically too as it makes you cast your mind forward to the competition itself. That said, since 25th June 2015, Groupama Team France has already been eating, thinking and sleeping the America’s Cup on a daily basis!
“This first phase of the 35th America’s Cup, with ten races for our French contingent, over nine days of Round Robins 1 and 2, promises to be extremely intense for all the teams. It also augurs well for some very high level racing and a showstopping spectacle aboard our foilers!
“Groupama Team France will be there on Friday 26th May 2017, where we’ll have the benefit of flying the French flag alongside those of five other nations - a sight that has not been seen since 2007.”
ORACLE TEAM USA’s Jimmy Spithill is prepared for a big fight in race one, is looking forward to the relief of finally racing, and has some advice for the people of Bermuda: “We have Groupama Team France in race one, and in Franck they have a Skipper who has more multihull experience than anyone in the America’s Cup. He comes with a good track record of running campaigns, he won an ocean race, he’s done record runs and he’s been successful. We respect that team and we know we’ll have quite bit on when we face them – they will be tough, just like the rest of them.
“Before you actually get to the races themselves there’s always a lot of curiosity about how you stack up against the other teams. This time we obviously have a lot more chances to line up together before we start the actual races, but you just never know when you get to the America’s Cup because generally, before the event starts, everyone is holding back a little. Overall, there’s a lot of unknowns, but also a little bit of relief, knowing you’re finally there. That combination of adrenaline and the desire to get out there, in front of all the crowds and the superyachts that’ll be there, it’ll be amazing.
“I think Bermuda will be in for a shock when we do reach race one of the America’s Cup, partly because of the amount of people who will come to the island and because of the international spotlight that will be shining on Bermuda, like it never has before. On TV it’s going to be seen around the world and all over the island there’s going to be so much going on. Bermudians love a party – well, this is going to be the biggest party they’ve ever experienced.”
