PENGUINS OUTLAST CAPITALS IN OFFENSIVE SHOWDOWN, SNAP WIN STREAK
The Penguins and Capitals combined for nine second period goals (PIT: 6, WSH: 3) including a hat trick by Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin (3-0—3), and both teams overcame multi-goal deficits before Conor Sheary (2-1—3) scored 34 seconds into overtime as the Penguins snapped the NHL-leading Capitals’ win streak at nine games.
* Per Elias, the Penguins and Capitals were the first teams to combine for at least 15 goals in a game since Oct. 27, 2011 when the Jets earned a 9-8 win over the Flyers. The Penguins also scored six goals in a period for the first time since March 21, 2000 at NYI (also six in the second period).
* Elias adds that the Penguins, who trailed 3-0 to start the game, became the second team in NHL history to overcome a three-goal deficit to snap an opposing team’s win streak of at least nine games. Pittsburgh joined the Hartford Whalers, who rallied from a 5-1 deficit against the Canadiens on March 19, 1980 in an eventual 5-5 tie, snapping Montreal’s win streak at nine games.
* The Penguins extended their home point streak to 13 games (12-0-1), including six consecutive wins. Pittsburgh (19-2-2, 40 points) leads the NHL in home wins and points this season.
* Sidney Crosby (1-3—4) registered a season-high four points and leads the NHL with 27 goals this season (37 GP). Crosby (27-23—50) also became the second player to reach the 50-point mark this season, trailing only Connor McDavid (14-37—51).
* Malkin registered the 11th hat trick of his NHL career. Elias notes that he passed Kevin Stevens (10) for the second-most hat tricks in Penguins franchise history, trailing only Mario Lemieux (40).
* Defensemen Justin Schultz (0-4—4) and Trevor Daley (0-3—3) each established career highs for assists in a game.
BURNS (AGAIN) NOTCHES GAME-WINNING GOAL IN SHARKS VICTORY
Brent Burns scored the game-winning goal at 7:08 of the second period to guide the Sharks to victory and extend his franchise record for most deciding tallies by a defenseman (15).
* Burns notched his fourth game-winning goal of the season (44 GP) to match his single-season career high set in 2007-08 (82 GP) and matched in 2015-16 (82 GP). He has collected 3-7—10 over his last six games and paces all defensemen in goals and points with 18-27—45 this season.
RED WINGS, ISLANDERS EARN SHUTOUT VICTORIES
The Red Wings and Islanders each secured victories on Monday backstopped by shutouts from their respective goaltenders:
* Jared Coreau (18 saves) posted his second shutout of the season (also Jan. 5 at LAK) to backstop the Red Wings to victory. Thomas Vanek scored the only goal of the contest to extend his point streak to six games (5-4—9).
* Thomas Greiss (32 saves) recorded his first shutout of the season and the fifth of his NHL career to backstop the Islanders to a 4-0 win. The Islanders blanked the Bruins in a road game for the first time in franchise history.
LOOSE PUCKS
Jujhar Khaira, a third-round selection (63rd overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft, scored the first goal of his NHL career (17 GP) to help the Oilers pick up their third consecutive win . . . The Lightning earned their first road win vs. LAK since Jan. 12, 2009 (3-1 W), snapping a four-game slide (0-4-0) . . . Sabres forward Jack Eichel scored twice and has recorded 10 goals in 22 games this season . . . Jets forward Mark Scheifele (1-1—2) reached the 20-goal mark for the second straight season . . . Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom (1-0—1) extended his point streak to seven games (4-9—13) . . . Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (3-6—9) and Lightning forward Jonathan Drouin (2-4—6) each extended their point streak to five games . . . Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom, Bruins left wing Brad Marchand and Hurricanes left wing Brock McGinn were named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Jan. 15 . . .
