It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we know Billy Wall, so we know Saluggi's.  It was first featured a year ago:
Billy has now made it twice as nice and this time we visited their second location, which opened in September 2016.  Located at 399 Grand Street, Saluggi's East we believe will make its neighborhood a hotbed of pizza activity.  We began with their lovely Roasted Beet and Arugula Salad, and we like that we see five salad selections here.  Lemon vinaigrette was thoughtfully put on the side for Ms. Pretty Picky, and it was a enticing accent to the roasted red beets, arugula and red onion, topped with the perfect dusting of feta.  We found the onion particularly smashing and it was cut well.
There are also a bevy of starters to choose from, and the Fried Calamari was quite inviting in a generous portion that is ideal to share as well.  Served with marinara and lemon wedges, the Italian Fried Calamari was exactly what you'd expect.
The best part of Saluggi's from a culinary aspect is their fresh-made mozzarella, literally made fresh on premises every day.  Not every Manhattan pizza venue is motivated enough to take the time to invest in this quality.  It makes everything it joins better, including the chicken parmesean entree, which is just ideal and had a short lifespan when placed in the vicinity of Peachy.  We chose penne to join the party and it was perfectly al dente.  The mozzarella also makes the grinders better: we chose the Saluggi's Meatball Hero (people from Connecticut do not say Hero or Hoagie. They say grinder.) The meatballs are 100% beef and 100% delicious and it arrives on a toasted roll with marinara and parmesean.  The heroes/grinders come with a choice of fries or salad.  We angelically chose the salad and we like that they offer this choice.
Of course the piece de resistance of Saluggi's is the pizza, complete with our favorite vegetable: fresh mozzarella...but seriously, we did choose a vegetable pizza of fresh arugula, fresh garlic, fresh tomato, roasted peppers, sauteed mushrooms, and sauteed spinach.  It was just as fantastic as the first time we went to the original Saluggi's location west of this one downtown.  The crust is perfectly crunchy on the perimeter and soft and strong enough to hold up all those vegetables!
Clearly this is the kind of look we are going for as you know from our recommendations from The Irish Gift Shop.
The Walls are from County Limerick.
But the pizza is all New York.
Saluggi's East is Terrific Takeout and we look forward to seeing what they do next.
