Peachy Ahoy: Coutts: "This has probably been some of the best racing we have seen in America’s Cup history"

This week, Sir Russell Coutts, CEO of the America’s Cup, gives his thoughts on what could be a pivotal weekend on Bermuda’s Great Sound as the battle between Jimmy Spithill’s ORACLE TEAM USA and Peter Burling’s Emirates New Zealand resumes in the America’s Cup Match, presented by Louis Vuitton.

The opening weekend of the showpiece finale of the 35th America’s Cup saw the Challengers, Burling’s Emirates Team New Zealand, blow the Defenders of the ‘Auld Mug’ Spithill’s ORACLE TEAM USA, out of the water, with the Kiwis winning the first four races in the final stage of the 35th America’s Cup, seizing a 3-0 lead in the first to seven points duel.

Comparing the two teams ahead of today’s highly anticipated third day of racing, Russell praised the strong start from Emirates Team New Zealand but warned the competition is not over just yet.

“Emirates Team New Zealand came out incredibly strong last weekend and totally dominated the racing, which I think was a surprise for a lot of people,” he said.

“However, Jimmy Spithill and his team will be looking to change that this weekend. They’ve made some good gains so don’t write ORACLE TEAM USA off just yet!”

The five-times America’s Cup winner then looked back on what has been a sensational 35th installment of the prestigious event, before reflecting on what its success could mean for the future of the America’s Cup itself and the legacy it leaves behind, particularly for the younger generations.

“This has probably been some of the best racing we have seen in America’s Cup history,” added Russell.

“There is an incredible energy in the sailing world and everyone has realised that this is an exciting brand. I have high hopes it will continue to grow.

“This event will leave a strong legacy and one of the most important things it has done is reconnect with youth sailing.

“In years gone by the demographic was getting older and older and that is not a good sign for growth, but this time round we’ve seen that change.”

“It is really important the America’s Cup has a strong influence on the future and getting more youth participation in the future.”
