Peachy Ahoy: Michael Douglas: "The whole day was just incredible"
"This America’s Cup is the most important, most extravagant, and greatest event that has ever been in Bermuda in my lifetime.”
A ringing endorsement indeed from Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas who enjoyed a truly up-close and personal experience of what the 35th America’s Cup has to offer on a spectacular opening day on Saturday (May 27th).
Douglas, whose direct links to Bermuda go back over 400 years through his family, was among the thousands of spectators inside the sold out America’s Cup Village on opening day, as they were treated to six action-packed races in the first day of the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup Qualifiers. In addition, they enjoyed a high energy performance from three-time Grammy Award winning entertainer Wyclef Jean and an incredible Opening Ceremony to cap off a memorable first day.

“Bermuda has been a home of mine since 1945,” said Douglas. “My wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and I lived here for 10 years, we raised a family here and we still have a home here now, it has been a long time love of this island.”
The Hollywood legend also enjoyed a very close look at the racing out on the water, an experience he will not forget in a hurry.
“Having a chance to be that close and personal with the boats was a real treat to enjoy,” added Douglas, who was accompanied around the course by America’s Cup Event Authority CEO and five-time ‘Auld Mug’ winner Sir Russell Coutts.
“A huge thank you to Sir Russell Coutts for allowing me to get that close and have a look at the guys in action.
“The racing was pretty spectacular and the whole day was just incredible.”
