It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW.
You know that by now.
And we know Haley Fox, founder and owner of Alice's Tea Cup that has three chapters!
It looks like Peachy decided to read them backwards to have a proper unbirthday; she begins with Chapter Three.
We knew Haley when we were only a month old in 2009:
Now that we have started Tea with Peachy Deegan, the Haley hit parade is starting formally.
So far, so good. This is Alice's Tea Cup's first formal review. We really love people like Culinary King Sal and Haley who wanted to work with us when we were a month old and had NO TWITTER ACCOUNT, AT ALL.
And, no one was talking about social media in 2009. The term had not been coined then to our knowledge.
Haley does not fool around and we love it; she has 140 teas from you to choose from whenever your little heart desires. It should come as no great surprise to anyone that we chose Irish Breakfast Extra Fancy to start with. It is a full-bodied, malty blend of Assam and Ceylon teas. Peachy Deegan is obviously Irish American and has lived in Cork as a student (check out the recent JFK exhibit at the NY Historical Society with Jean Kennedy Smith) and mainly drinks Irish tea and tea from the UK in her non-review life-all black tea with caffeine. At one point when we knew someone that had a store in County Wicklow (that has since closed or we would be probably writing on it; Wicklow is home county of Cathy Kelly and Hozier also) we only drank tea from that store. Haley's Irish tea measures up to the best we've had. We don't have to tell you that having strong tea is tantamount to a feature in this column. And we do like the tea strong as well (we do not care for wimpy tea, coffee or men.) We definitely credit caffeine with accolades for us getting to 22,000 posts and you better believe we drink a lot of coffee and tea. We understand this is tea for two but Peachy had no problem drinking it by herself.
Alice's Tea Cup is absolutely charming and exquisite. You could go dressed up or casual. We think you should always be dressed for tea. Pinkies out!
Bien sur mes amies, the name is derived from the book strictly. Haley's favorite character is the Mad Hatter because every day is an unbirthday! We agree with Haley; it is a great philosophy she says and it's the way we should all live. Alice's Tea Cup is co-owned by Haley's sister Lauren, who is an artist and did this gorgeous artwork. Their family grew up on the Upper West side of Manhattan. For all those that are reading us for our movie column you should know Haley used to work with MGM.
Alice's Tea Cup opened as a brand on December 15, 2001 and in 2006, Chapter Three opened which is the Upper East Side location. Scones are typical of tea and we selected plain with buttermilk as Peachy Deegan is a purist; she likes things to be as they are supposed to be in their truest form. We were pleased it and liked the raspberry preserves and clotted cream accented with lemon. We understand there are savory options which we would probably love especially ham and cheese. If you are into vegan, you should know they have vegan scones.
The Mad Hatter Tea for Two comes with two sandwiches that you can pick.
We chose the smoked salmon and the curried chicken.
The curried chicken sandwich is a bevy of goodness from the red onion, celery and granny smith apple teaming up with greens and tomato slices to cover all produce aspects of this lovely treat to the golden raisin fennel semolina bread, which is divine. It perfectly cradles the wonderfully spiced chicken, which is not too spicy at all and also not too unspicy. It's just right for Goldilocks Peachy (with brown hair.)
Even better is the smoked salmon sandwich which was our favorite edible of the visit. The salmon swims in from Norway and it is served open-faced with a light lemon-dill butter (to-die-for!) made on premises and it is partying on pumpernickel. It is fantastic!
Yes, this is where you should be in a few short hours for tea time.
What we believe really sets Alice's Tea Cup apart from our initial visit is the depth of their menu. You know who is practically always hungry and wants to eat something substantial; we are impressed there are four salad options on the tea menu. We chose the Lapsang (Chinese Smoked Tea) smoked chicken breast salad.
The chicken luxuriates in marinade for 24 hours and the mixed greens dance with sliced tea-marinated eggs. Granny smith apples superbly sliced radiate on the edge and if you are into salad dressing, you will adore the ginger-soy dressing that they agreeably put on the side for Ms. Pretty Picky.
Chocolate cake is essential (you could also pick lemon tarte or chocolate mousse); here it arrives in style with vanilla buttercream frosting that in itself is a work of art. Cookies for the cookie monster in residence include sesame shortbread, butterscotch, oatmeal cranberry, ginger molasses and chocolate chip.
Go have yourself an unbirthday with Haley and Lauren!
We look forward to seeing what they do next and we will be reading other chapters.
