Discovery Welcomes 2024 Host City Announcement as Olympic Games Return to Europe
Discovery Communications and Eurosport, the Home of the Olympics in Europe, congratulated the Paris 2024 Olympic Bid Committee on its successful campaign that will see the capital city of France host the 2024 Olympic Games.
The announcement was made by the International Olympic Committee this evening (CEST) in Lima, Peru. IOC President Thomas Bach also announced Los Angeles would be the host city of the 2028 Olympic Games.
Jean-Briac Perrette, Discovery Networks International, said: “Discovery Communications is a true global company run by local market experts and teams, so our drive, enthusiasm and commitment is irrespective of the location of the Games. Even so, as Home of the Olympic Games in Europe through 2024 we’re delighted the Games are returning to the continent and know they’ll be a stunning spectacle for our fans.
“We are committed to sharing these Games with more people on more screens than ever before, offering the ultimate Games experience for everyone across Europe using the best talent and most innovative technology. We look forward to working closely with Paris 2024 and playing our part to deliver the best Games experience possible.”
Peter Hutton, Eurosport CEO, said: “We are delighted the IOC has chosen Paris as the Host City for the 2024 Olympic Games. As the Home of the Olympic Games in Europe, we are excited that we will be able to bring the Games to 50 countries and territories across the continent, giving millions of people the opportunity to enjoy coverage of the biggest sporting extravaganza on the planet.
“From a Eurosport point of view we are thrilled that the Games will be returning to Europe. With our central operations based in Paris, our team will be able to touch and feel the magic of the Olympic Games for themselves which only adds to the excitement.”
Along with Discovery Network International President JB Perrette, Eurosport CEO Peter Hutton met with Paris 2024 co-President Bernard Lapassett in June to outline the company’s plans for the event that will deliver the ultimate Olympic Games viewing experience for millions of fans across Europe.
Discovery Communications holds the exclusive multimedia rights for 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018 through the 2024 Olympic Games (broadcast rights in France for the Olympic Games 2022 and 2024), announced with the International Olympic Committee in June 2015.
