Showing both speed and consistency, Park Place Motorsports picked up right where it left off at Daytona International Speedway for the Roar Before the Rolex 24.

Park Place Motorsports set and tested its lineup for the 56th running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona. The list includes Team Principal Patrick Lindsey, Porsche Factory Driver Jörg Bergmeister, endurance driver Tim Pappas and Norbert Siedler who will join the team for his third run at Daytona. Each driver brings plenty of experience in the Porsche 911 GT3 R to make for a convincing win, should the race show favor to the team.

Aside from the lineup many of the crew have returned for another year of racing with Park Place Motorsports. One of the team’s strong points being the effortless symphony conducted during pit stops. Most notably Mike Johnson and Richard Selwin were at the helm, engineering the car. Crew Chief Gary Biehl also added a tire manager and mechanics to his list of players.

Both drivers and crew worked together over the weekend to find a setup worthy of a Rolex.

“In regards to the Roar, overall it was really great for the team,” Lindsey said. “We were back to where we left off concerning synergy with the team. We added two new faces, and they fit right in with everyone. I’m pleased that we will continue executing our strategy well.”

We’re Trying Something New.

Along with setting up the car, the series set garage placement. In past years the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship decided paddock placement in the garages by the team’s previous championship performance. This year a 15-minute qualifying session was held for those coveted garage spots. With a field larger than spots available the GT Daytona class was fighting for position in a closed garage rather than an open-air garage.

The qualifying session also gave officials time to assess the Balance of Performance of each class. Balance of Performance is decided by officials to create a more level playing field among manufacturers. Top speed may not be the focus of testing for a 24-hour race; qualifying brings out the potential top speed teams could reach while fighting for position near the end of the twice around the clock race.

Who Done It?

Park Place Motorsports gave qualifying duties to Lindsey while other teams opted for their professional drivers. Lindsey placed the car 17th in the GTD class. The position was below where the team had hoped though they were not disappointed with the overall performance of the No. 73 Porsche.

“The qualifying format, I thought, was a good idea,” Lindsey said. “I think it proved to be worthwhile because for some cars that weren’t showing all they had in the practice sessions kind of came alive, as was needed. I think we’ll see a different pace in qualifying when we come back for the race later this month. It was a good format, also a chance for teams not in the championship last year to get a spot in the garages. We were the big losers in the equation, all in all; it’s a better format going forward with Balance of Performance.”

Had the garages been set by last year’s championship points standings, the team would have been third in line for garage placement.

What’s Going On?

The Rolex 24 At Daytona takes place Jan. 25-28 with the green flag dropping Jan. 27 at 2:40 p.m. EST and the checkered flag following Jan. 28 at 2:40 p.m.The race will broadcast live on FOX, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and FOX Sports GO through segments of the race. IMSA.tv will support the race in its entirety.
