Nothing could be finer than drinking a Manhattan in Carolina in the morning!
At 1897 Market in Charlotte Douglas International Airport....
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW.
It is a momentous occasion when we start to cover a new state in dining, and this is the first time we have started a dining column that ignores geography and considers travel: airports.
Welcome to the first post in Peachy's Picks North Carolina!
Welcome to the first post in Peachy's Picks Airports! You are all already familiar with our aviation column, Pilot Peachy:
This post is dedicated to our friend and colleague, Charles Kuralt, a highly esteemed UNC Alum:
Charles Kuralt Commencement Address 1996 at the University of North Carolina:
Do not cut off both ends of the pot roast without knowing why...we would encourage you to watch all of this.  He talks about meeting someone at a bar in an airport so we think he especially would like this column...we are still listening to you Charles and we are not doing things the way they have always been done.
Is there anyone else that reviews airport restaurants!?!  For years when Peachy has visited airports, she has looked into featuring various restaurants, however, we refuse to lower our standards and work with a restaurant that is not competitive with what we see in Manhattan.  There are a lot of unfortunate experiences you can have with food on the run and remember, we do not publish on the poor performers.  On our first visit, 1897 Market proved that they are the best restaurant we have ever encountered at an airport.  No restaurant is great without people that care behind it.  These girls at the reception desk were the most gracious hosts we have seen at an airport restaurant, and the management team was equally impressive in our extremely limited time; Peachy Deegan was inbetween flights.  Though HMS Host is a large company, it felt like a small one in this experience because of the level of intelligence and care we encountered.
The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed yet you can see that those that work at 1897 Market are completely aware that visitors are in transit, essential when you need to make your flight on time but not be starving.  We cannot ever remember eating well on an airplane, which makes airport restaurants even more essential.  You can check out the planes from the restaurant view.  1897 Market is located in the main atrium of the Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the largest American hubs.  The name 1897 Market is a nod to the inception of HMS Host, the owner of this restaurant, and specifically, 1897 is a division of Autogrill, out of Italy under HMS Host.  We love the Italians and while this was in the process of being published, Italy in Venezuela started following us on Twitter.  HMS Host was once part of Marriott, and it is mainly in travel locations.
1897 Market is 10,000 square feet and is the biggest restaurant in this airport; HMS Host owns 46 locations of the fifty plus locations in Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Executive Chef Nathan Howey tells us that his goal is to make good food available to travelers.
We see he is successful in meeting this goal!  Nathan is one of around fifteen Elite Executive Chefs of HMS Host in the USA all located in mode of transport areas.  We hear they also own PZA at JFK, however, we did not visit them (yet) as guess who checked her bags and guess who does not travel light...and the bags needed to be picked up at JFK.
This is the best salad we have ever seen in an airport.
Meet Farmhouse, under Greens on the menu, suggested by Executive Chef Nathan Howey, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, who opened this restaurant in this, its original location in Charlotte Douglas International Airport in May 2015.  1897 Market serves 1,600 people every day for all three meals from 6am to 10pm, seven days a week.
Roasted beets, mixed greens, goat cheese, and radish are ravished in honey walnut vinaigrette which does not overpower the salad components at all.  All parts of the salad were absolutely fresh and it was a total delight to see this kind of commitment to freshness in an airport restaurant.  If you are an avid reader of our regular Manhattan dining column, you know who always orders dressing on the side but this was perfectly dressed the very first time.

Peachy is a cheeseburger enthusiast, and was bowled over by Neese's Country Burger.  It is nothing like a burger you would encounter in the Big Apple or most cities, we surmise.  It explodes with a fabulous 50/50 blend of Neese's sausage, a local Charlotte brand that we understand is a century old (click here to see the brand history), and ground chuck.

The carnivorous combination is combined with BBQ sauce and black char smashed on flat top and served with Queen Charlotte pimento cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle and lemon aioli all culminating in a beautiful blend of flavors and textures.  We reveled in its pure deliciousness and ate half of it immediately, happily.  We found envious airline passengers around Peachy when she ate the second half on the plane...
You won't find this in Manhattan.
It's medium well to well, and you will revel in its spicy zestiness.  Bonus: it is served with delicious parmesean fries.
Every professional we encountered at 1897 Market was cordial and welcoming, and truly exuded joy in their vocation including manager Peter Katkout, of the great town of Plymouth, Massachusetts.  We do not always see this and note, we only publish positive reviews.  They took the initiative to serve @Manhattanpeachy a #Manhattan with Bullet bourbon, bitters, sherry and sweet vermouth.  Right down to the cherry, it was simply smashing.  Peachy's grandparents drank Manhattans and guess who got the cherry.

We opted for a cheeseburger and the other components of this review were selected by Nathan in the interest of time.  We definitely want to try pizza next time!  We believe this is the first time grits have ever been featured, because this is literally the first time that Peachy has ever liked grits.
BBQ Shrimp and Grits are composed of BBQ spiced shrimp pan-seared and cooked down with tomato and white wine, finished gloriously in butter and lemon.  These are no ordinary grits: they are Cheddar Adluh (South Carolina mill) Grits finished in butter, polenta style.  They are beautifully creamy with signature texture of grits.  Tomato and onion ragout, arugula and tobasco vinaigrette enhance this party on a plate.
