The Philadelphia and Reading Rail Road Company was one of the first railroad companies in the United States. Established In 1833 it operated its first trains from the Pennsylvania coals mines to the shores along the city of Philadelphia. By 1871 it had become the largest company in the world with annual sales of $170 million. Many today know of the company as the Reading Railroad, made famous through the popular board game Monopoly.

In 1889 the company decided to construct a train depot, passenger station and company headquarters. The train station attached to this building was the largest single-span structure in the world when it was completed and it was the last surviving single-span arched train shed in the United States.

Today, the train station is a part of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The building known as the Headhouse served as the company offices until the last train rolled out to much fanfare on November 6, 1984. On June 30, 1972 the Headhouse joined many famous Philadelphia landmarks on the National Register of Historic Properties.

The Philadelphia Marriott Downtown opened its Main Tower in 1995, and then took over the vacated Headhouse from the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. In 1999 the Headhouse Tower came back to life as an extension of the Marriott, offering 208 guest rooms, two elegant ballrooms and the original historic exterior facade.
