The New York Philharmonic announces updates for its 2018 holiday season, which features Handel’s Messiah, Presented by Gary W. Parr; Holiday Brass; Home Alone in Concert; and New Year’s Eve with Renée Fleming conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden.
The New York Philharmonic will partner with The Family Center for its annual Holiday Toy Drive, collecting new, unused, and unwrapped toys and books for children of all ages in the lobby of David Geffen Hall at all of the performances of Handel’s Messiah (December 11–15) and Holiday Brass (December 16). The donations will go to children and teenagers who receive services from The Family Center, a Brooklyn-based agency whose mission is to strengthen families affected by crisis, illness, or loss to create a more secure present and future for their children. The majority of the children have faced a major trauma, crisis, or loss and come from families that subsist on incomes falling far below the federal poverty threshold. In almost all cases, the toys and gifts given to Family Center children are the only presents that they will receive this holiday season.
Bramwell Tovey will appear as a special guest on the 23rd annual Holiday Brass concert, joining former Principal Trumpet Philip Smith (conductor, host, performer) and the New York Philharmonic Brass and Percussion. Mr. Tovey will perform on piano and euphonium, conduct parts of the program, and more. The Juilliard Trombone Choir, under the direction of Principal Trombone Joseph Alessi, will perform holiday arrangements on David Geffen Hall’s Grand Promenade at 2:30 p.m., before Holiday Brass begins at 3:00 p.m. The program — featuring works from the brass canon, from the Baroque to the contemporary, and Christmas and Chanukah favorites — has also been announced; see listing below.
As a special treat for the holiday season, audience members are invited to bring select drinks, served in specialty New York Philharmonic cups, into the hall at Home Alone in Concert.
