Thomas Morrissey is a legend in haircolor and we have worked with him on haircolor exclusively since September 2018. He started his career working on Marilyn Monroe and also was highly regarded for his work on Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, among others. We are honored to work with Thomas, John and their team.
Previously on Whom You Know, Thomas Morrissey of John D'Orazio has been featured:
and he and his team earned a spot in our Best of 2018:
We are on the home stretch of winter with spring just around the corner! Dryness pervades everything and we talked to Thomas to find out how to make your hair its best right now.
"Colored hair should always be cared for in a very gentle way. For example, with your long hair after you shampoo it, you should be combing it out with a wide tooth comb carefully, not ripping it. Once it's colored, it's a little bit more delicate. Conditioning regularly, once, twice, three times a week. Leave your conditioner on for ten minutes."
This visit, Thomas Morrissey updated Peachy's roots with her natural color and added golden highlights. "We're lifting your natural brunette and we're making it a chestnut brown and once we shampoo that off, we'll be putting some golden flecks around your face to brighten up your look for spring, becoming summer. In the summer months, we'll probably do a little more of the highlighting, making it a little bit blonder," shares Thomas Morrissey. At the color conclusion as per usual, Kati brilliantly blowdried Peachy's hair.
As all avid readers know, Peachy Deegan loves being Irish, has resided in Ireland as a student at UCC, graduated from Boston College which was started in 1863 by Irish Immigrants in downtown Boston, and we could go on and on. Not only is Thomas among the very best in haircolor, but also he is 100% Irish and as we are days away from Fifth Avenue having its green stripe, we turn to our shared heritage.
"All four of my grandparents were born in County Cork, Ireland. My parents were first-generation Irish American, and myself and my brother and sister are second-generation. So we're pretty close to being born in Ireland! I went for a visit a few years ago and we went to Dublin, Cork, Kenmare, Dingle, Shannon, and Adare, all of which were lovely. It's a gorgeous country. The food is fabulous. Most of their chefs go to the Le Cordon Bleu to train, and then they come back to Ireland. What they did that was so outstanding to me the three course [style presentation]: an appetizer, an entree and a dessert, and they would be ceremoniously presented to you, each course. They use silver trays, and before dinner when you're looking at the menu you're having a glass of wine or a cocktail in the drawing room. Then they come and get you and bring you into the restaurant and now your appetizers are there with the silver covers, your wine is breathing, the candles are lit, and everything is very dramatic. At one of these dinners, I remember my brother saying to me: 'Where are we?' and I replied, the Park Hotel, in Kenmare. There's nothing like it in the States."

We cover movies extensively in Movietime in Manhattan, especially since we started to work with Warner Brothers in 2010. Thomas had been impressed by Green Book, and post-Oscars, it's clear he's not the only one! He called it. "The Green Book was one of my favorites; A Star is Born also was a favorite and I would have been very happy with either one [winning best picture.] I don't think A Star is Born was recognized enough. It got best song, but I think it deserved more than that. I think part of the lack of awards for A Star is Born is that it opened too early. It opened months ago and as the Best Picture nominees were opening in November and December people forgot about it."
"So did they add their highlights at the wrong time?" asked Peachy, who was getting highlights at the right time.
"Very good. The wrong time! But I thought Gaga was great, I thought [Bradley Cooper] was great, I think the direction was great. But Green Book was about a black African American pianist who lives above Carnegie Hall-a true story. He's going on a tour of the south in the 1960s which is still segregated. He's looking for a driver/bodyguard type. And so Viggo Mortensen pays that character. In the beginning, there's a lot of tension around them. Viggo's character just assumes that the black piano player likes fried chicken, but the black piano player has never had fried chicken in his life and he's dressed beautifully. By the time the film ends, they're hugging each other, they're loving each other and it's a warm, lovely friendship buddy kind of a story. You come out of it very happy. Wonderful acting."
Just as important as getting the color right is the fabulous experience of getting there from professionally booking with Mary to John's smiling face. This salon oozes understated class and discretion in every aspect of business and it is a sincere pleasure to visit the bright white beautifully decorated in dark green marble salon, complete with a fireplace. You will feel like you are visiting some of your most favorite relatives.
Color by Thomas Morrissey of The John D'Orazio Salon continues to earn our Highest Recommendation.
