#ChezPeachy #SmallScreenScenes @HGTV HGTV SURVEY REVEALS 2020 HOME RENOVATION TRENDS

Homeowners are prioritizing kitchens and bathrooms in the New Year with traditional flare

2020 marks a new decade, and Americans are welcoming it with upgrades and updates to their living spaces. A new survey, conducted by the Digital Team at HGTV and Open Mind Strategy, found that more than a third of Americans (38%) are planning to do some kind of home renovation in 2020, which is slightly up from 2019 (36%). Furthermore, men are seemingly more excited about redoing their spaces with this number increasing to 46% for males aged 25 – 44.

“Every day, we bring new trends and design styles to life, and with that, inspire more Americans to recreate these looks and ideas in their own homes,” said Mariel Clark, Vice President of Digital for HGTV. “From kitchen or bathroom remodels to bedroom decor, HGTV is here to help consumers find the inspiration needed to elevate their spaces, both big and small.”

When comparing 2019 vs. 2020, Americans will continue to prioritize their kitchen (55%), followed by the bathroom (46%), bedroom (41%) and living/family room (24%). The outdoor space is slightly put on the backburner this year (down 7%) versus the dining room (up 1%). In terms of the top five most popular design styles, traditional remains king with over a third of Americans selecting. Meanwhile, a taste for midcentury modern has grown by 11% to 27% from 2019, followed by farmhouse (24%), bohemian (16%) and rustic (16%).

When it comes to traditional design in the kitchen, HGTV’s digital experts recommend incorporating neutral hues like creams, whites, light grays or blues. This palette pairs well with natural elements such as marble, brick, stone and wood. As trends evolve into the next decade, be on the lookout for the return of warm tones like tans and beiges and natural wood cabinets in finishes like walnut or oak.

Midcentury modern designers should look to clean lines, geometric and organic shapes and practical “form follows function” design elements. For home updates, midcentury modern often features matte finishes and textures like woven or shag rugs and wood paneling or grasscloth wall coverings. Small doses of chrome, lacquer, glass or polished brass can make a mid mod statement. While the style can be based on simple, neutral colors like white, black and wood tones, color is making a comeback. Look for bolder hues in green, gold, orange or even retro pastels in turquoise and pink.

Budgeting will be an important factor this year, with 62% of respondents planning to spend less than $2,000 on their renovation. With that in mind, HGTV experts recommend the following ways to cut spending:
Start small: Instead of tackling an entire kitchen remodel, start by adding color or pattern via the backsplash or a trendy wallpaper. Or, consider replacing a single dated appliance or giving the cabinets, walls or trim a fresh coat of paint. All are easy updates you can tackle yourself that boost your home’s bottom line without draining your wallet.
Work with what you already have: As the old saying goes, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Instead of starting from scratch, look for ways you can enhance your existing space such as swapping out a dated light fixture, popping in some pattern with removable wallpaper or upgrading the cabinet knobs for trendy brass hardware.
Make your investment count: If you’re planning a big update, such as new roofing or hardwood floors, make sure you invest in materials that can stand the test of time. Wear and tear can ruin lower quality items quicker, causing you to pay just as much, or more, to replace a budget buy instead of paying more initially for a lasting fix.

“With any of these projects, it’s important not to rush into them and to take the time to think through a budget and your goals for the renovation,” continued Clark. “Whether you’re making the kitchen of your dreams or your plan is to resell, make sure you understand how the upgrade or remodel will improve the space.”
