We now warn you, don't read it until you read this first! We made the mistake of reading them backwards, and have high hopes for a third book in this Atlee Pine, FBI star series!
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and we virtually know Atlee through the pages of these fantastic books. Told with punchy style and FBI knowledge, David Baldacci spins a tale that is best read in one sitting cover to cover, canceling any other plans of the day because it's that worth it to devote your time to. However, it's more likely you'll have to pick it up and put it down (because perhaps you have obligations?!) and that just ups the intrigue factor.
Avid readers know that Atlee was born a twin and has been a single survivor for quite awhile. More of her backstory and early FBI days are established in Long Road to Mercy, and it's again a vacation for city dwellers like Peachy, totally unfamiliar with the Grand Canyon and really not all that likely to get on the next mule there. Isn't mule a shoe?!
The direct descriptions and unwinding pace of the plot work well in Baldacci-style, and Long Road to Mercy develops with sub-plots that you'll need to keep in the back of your mind. Everything does not meet the eye.
We have one problem with Atlee-we do think she should be taking better care of her Mustang. If you also are a fan of Steve McQueen and Bullitt you know what that car is worth now:
We are however glad she enjoys it and remember this is just fiction. Perhaps Baldacci has quite the garage...we don't know.
Long Road to Mercy is a real adventure and there is quite a lot of Thelma and Louise going on, and though we don't see Brad Pitt here, perhaps they can find him on Tinder.
International scandal, nuclear capabilities and clandestine affairs are like sticky taffy among these pages and your eyes will eat the candy with each turn of the page.
Long Road to Mercy is Recommended by Whom You Know!

She was thirty-five, and the last twelve years of her life had been spent with a shiny badge riding on her hip. The gold shield was topped by an open-winged eagle, and below that was Justitia, holding her scales and sword. It was fitting, Pine thought, that a female was depicted on the badge of the preeminent law enforcement agency in the world.
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.
It’s seared into Atlee Pine’s memory: the kidnapper’s chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared. She never saw Mercy again.
Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She’s the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.
When one of the Grand Canyon’s mules is found stabbed to death and mutilated at the bottom of the canyon—and its rider missing—Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind, but just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she’s abruptly called off the case.
If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it.
