This May, the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF) takes the extraordinary step of offering its classes and membership benefits for free to Francophiles around the world. As a thank you to our current members as well as a gesture to everyone who is helping to fight the pandemic from health workers to those socially distancing at home, FIAF has programmed a month filled with immersive courses, captivating films, fascinating talks, inspiring performances, and much more that can be accessed online without charge.

“FIAF is stepping with gusto into the foray of creating and offering rich online content,” said FIAF President Marie-Monique Steckel. “We hope lovers of French culture will jump with us into this exciting new frontier.”

Free French Classes & Library Access

For the first time in its history, FIAF will offer its 10-hour Introduction to French language course for free. Courses on Zoom will begin each week throughout the month with one of FIAF’s native-speaking teachers. FIAF’s immersive online introduction courses are designed to have students speaking in French by the end of the first class. Sign ups are available at FIAF's Language Center.

In conjunction with its French classes, FIAF’s Haskell Library offers complimentary programming including French language discussion groups, language-learning games and exercises, book clubs, and access to the free French digital library Culturethèque with its collection of books, magazines, videos, podcasts, music, and more.

Free French Films

Building on its beloved weekly CinéSalon series, FIAF has forged its first ever partnership to offer free streams of recent French films with film distributor Kino Lorber. Thoughtfully organized by FIAF film curator Delphine Selles-Alvarez from Kino Lorber’s acclaimed collection, the series features five films:

• The Trouble With You (2018) by Pierre Salvadori; Tuesday, May 5 to Monday, June 1

• Diplomacy (2014) by Volker Schlöndorff; May 12 to June 1

• A Faithful Man (2018) by Louis Garrel; May 19 to June 1

• Slack Bay (2016) by Bruno Dumont; May 19 to June 1

• The Fairy (2011) by Dominique Abel, Fiona Gordon, and Bruno Romy; May 26 to June 1.

These films will be available on successive Tuesdays throughout the month until June 1 on Kino Lorber’s streaming platform, Kino Now. FIAF members will receive priority access for the first 48 hours, before opening to the general public the following Thursday. Access codes will be distributed via email by RSVP'ing on the FIAF website.

Free French Food & Wine Programs

Members Month kicks off with a week-long celebration of French Food and Wine. On Friday, May 1, Xavier Flouret, founder of Xavier Flouret Wines and founder and CEO of Cognac One, will be joined by Hortense Bernard, general manager of Millesima USA, for a virtual wine tasting. FIAF’s traditional Rendez-Vous member night, held the first Tuesday of each month, goes online on May 5 with pastry chef Dominique Ansel who speak with New York Times food columnist Melissa Clark about his new cookbook, Everyone Can Bake. Ladurée USA’s Elisabeth Holder Raberin will talk about bringing the coveted French macarons to New York City on Wednesday, May 6. To cap off the week, Ariane Daguin, the founder of gourmet food supplier D’Artagnan, will stream a live masterclass on how to cook the perfect duck breast from her kitchen on Friday, May 8.

Free French Culture

Throughout the month, all of FIAF’s programming will be available to the public for free including a live performance of The Misanthrope, presented by Molière in the Park, on Saturday, May 2. Additional talks and performances with notable artists and thinkers from France and the US will be announced shortly.
