NHL STATS AND INFORMATION NOTES
2020 STANLEY CUP QUALIFIERS: CAROLINA HURRICANES (6) VS. NEW YORK RANGERS (11)
#NHLSTATS: CAROLINA HURRICANES
* Rod Brind’Amour captained the Hurricanes to their first Stanley Cup in 2006. He is the all-time franchise leader in playoff games played (72), ranks second in goals (18) and third in both assists (20) and points (38).
* After going 0-3 in Game 7s while based in Hartford, the club has posted a perfect 5-0 record in the seventh game of a series since relocation – including a double-overtime multi-goal comeback victory in the First Round last year. Brind’Amour scored the winning goal – assisted by Justin Williams – in the first such contest in Raleigh, in the 2006 Conference Finals against Buffalo.
* Williams leads all active players and is tied for 10th place in NHL history with 28 points when his team is facing elimination (15-13—28 in 25 GP). His 15 goals in that scenario are tied for second-most all-time, one back of Mark Messier (16) for the most in League history when on the brink of elimination.
* Williams’ legacy as “Mr. Game 7” began during his stint with Philadelphia when he tallied the game-winning goal and added two assists for the Flyers in a 6-1 win over the Maple Leafs in the 2003 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. Later with Carolina, he had 1-2—3 in the decisive game of the 2006 Eastern Conference Final and a goal in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final to help clinch the first championship in franchise history.
* He captured two more Stanley Cups with Los Angeles and tallied 2-3—5 in three Game 7s (all in 2014). Overall, Williams has 7-8—15 in nine career Game 7s (8-1 record), the most points and tied with Glenn Anderson for the most goals in Game 7 history.
* Williams aims to become the eighth player in NHL history to win two or more Stanley Cups with two or more franchises. The others: Red Kelly (4 w/ DET, 4 w/ TOR), Dick Duff (2 w/ TOR, 4 w/ MTL), Frank Mahovlich (4 w/ TOR, 2 w/ MTL), Bryan Trottier (4 w/ NYI, 2 w/ PIT), Bob Goldham (2 w/ TOR, 3 w/ DET), Larry Murphy (2 w/ PIT, 2 w/ DET) and Patrick Roy (2 w/ MTL, 2 w/ COL). Williams would be the first of that group to return to a team and win the Cup.
* The Hurricanes roster features five players who have won a Cup, which places them sixth among resuming clubs (STL: 21, WSH: 12, PIT: 10, CHI: 8 and BOS: 6; includes players with min. 1 GP for any NHL team in 2019-20). Those five players have a combined seven Cup wins (tied for fifth-most): Williams (3 as noted), Joel Edmundson (2019 STL), Teuvo Teravainen (2015 CHI), Trevor van Riemsdyk (2015 CHI) and Jordan Staal (2009 PIT).
* Sebastian Aho led the Hurricanes in goals and points this season (38-28—66 in 68 GP) and has 5-7—12 in 15 career playoff games. Among Hurricanes/Whalers players to play at least 10 postseason games, Aho’s 0.80 points-per-game rate stands as the fifth-highest in franchise history.
* Andrei Svechnikov, who will not celebrate his 21st birthday until March 26, 2021, had 3-2—5 in nine games for the Hurricanes during the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs – the most career postseason goals and points (tied) in franchise history by a player prior to his 21st birthday. The most career playoff goals by a player before age 21 is nine, accomplished by current teammate Staal who had 9-1—10 in 25 playoff games (w/ PIT) before his 21st birthday.
* Jaccob Slavin, who appeared in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time in 2019, ranked fourth among defensemen in assists (tied) and sixth in points with 0-11—11 in 15 GP. Slavin’s 0.73 points per game in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs ranks higher than in any of his five regular-season campaigns (Highest: 0.53 P/GP in 2019-20).
* Slavin had nine assists in the 2019 First Round, a franchise record by any player in a single series. Only eight other defensemen in NHL history have had nine or more assists in one playoff series: Paul Coffey (2x), Al MacInnis, Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, Larry Murphy, Mark Howe and Phil Housley.
* Two players in franchise history have recorded at least five points in a best-of-five series - John Anderson (3-4—7) and Kevin Dineen (2-4—6) each did so during the Whalers' three-game sweep of the Quebec Nordiques in the 1986 Division Semifinals.
#NHLSTATS: NEW YORK RANGERS
* The Rangers finished the 2019-20 season with 234 goals for (including shootout-deciding goals), the fifth-highest total among all teams behind the Lightning (245), Capitals (240), Maple Leafs (238) and Avalanche (237).
* The Rangers’ roster is the youngest of any resuming team with an average age of 26.2, slightly younger than the Blackhawks (26.3), Blue Jackets (26.4) and Maple Leafs (26.8).
* Artemi Panarin collected a career-high 95 points in 2019-20 (32-63—95 in 69 GP) Only two undrafted players who debuted in 1963-64 or later and were eligible for the NHL Draft have recorded a higher playoffs points-per-game pace than Panarin (min. 20 GP).
* Mika Zibanejad is as one of four players on New York’s active roster to score an overtime goal for any team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, doing so for the Rangers in Game 5 of the 2017 First Round. The others: Marc Staal (2012 w/ NYR), Chris Kreider (2017 w/ NYR) and Panarin (2018 w/ CBJ). Only five players have scored multiple postseason overtime goals for the Rangers.
* Panarin led all NHL players with nine points against the Hurricanes in 2019-20 (3-6—9 in 4 GP), recording multiple points in all four games. Zibanejad ranked third (3-5—8 in 3 GP).
* Henrik Lundqvist stands as the Rangers franchise leader in playoff wins (61) and shutouts (10). He sits two victories shy of tying Curtis Joseph (63) for 13th place on the NHL’s all-time list. Only Marc-Andre Fleury (15) has more career playoff shutouts among active goaltenders.
* The Rangers have played 129 playoff games since 2005-06 when Lundqvist entered the League, with “King Henrik” starting all but one of those contests – Kevin Weekes started Game 2 of the 2006 Conference Quarterfinals against New Jersey. Lundqvist’s run of 127 consecutive playoff starts is the third-longest such streak in NHL history, behind Martin Brodeur (194 w/ NJD) and Patrick Roy (137 w/ MTL and COL).
* Igor Shesterkin burst onto the scene in 2019-20 (10-2-0, 2.52 GAA and .932 SV%) and now aims to become the sixth rookie goaltender to earn a playoff win for the Rangers. Only five goaltenders have won a playoff game for the Rangers before age 25: John Vanbiesbrouck (9), Steve Baker (7), Mike Richter (5), Jim Henry (2) and Steve Weeks (1).
* Kaapo Kakko, the second overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, set a franchise record for career points by an 18-year-old during the regular season (8-11—19 in 51 GP) before celebrating his 19th birthday in February. Only two skaters have played a playoff game for the Rangers as a teenager: Steven Rice (2-1—3 in 2 GP) and Jackie McLeod (0-0—0 in 7 GP).
* Adam Fox (8-34—42) finished second in team scoring among defensemen this season behind Tony DeAngelo (15-38—57). Should Fox find the score sheet in the postseason, the third-round pick (66th overall) in the 2016 NHL Draft can become just the sixth rookie blueliner in Rangers history to record at least five points in a single playoff year. Reijo Ruotsalainen holds the franchise record after he collected 4-5—9 (10 GP) during the 1982 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
BROTHERLY LOVE
* Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal and Rangers defenseman Marc Staal are brothers and have squared off in five games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, with Jordan’s club holding the edge (4-1). Only seven sets of brothers have gone head-to-head in more than eight playoff games, with Dale Hunter and Mark Hunter pacing the list at 17 postseason showdowns.
BEST-OF-5 PLAYOFF SERIES
* The Hurricanes have competed in two best-of-five series during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, both while based in Hartford. They hold a 1-1 series record in that format, winning 3-0 against the Quebec Nordiques in 1986 and losing 3-0 to Montreal in 1980.
* The Rangers have won eight of their 12 best-of-five series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, reaching a fifth and final game in four of those contests.
