Too bad we can't meet Alex on the Upper West Side at Matthew's restaurant to chat about his book! But as a Canadian, he must be celebrating the high holy time of the year, Stanley Cup season! Alex, who are you picking?
The Answer Is is an absolute must read for all red-blooded Americans and Canadians (and you too Montreal Canadiens) so inbetween periods listening to High Holy Druid of Hockey Mike Milbury, you should crack open this book! And you can read it in the remaining 24 hours before and after the games.
The format is completely laudable. The book is so attractive we couldn't write in it, a rarity. Alex says just enough to regale you without going overboard. As you might expect, this work is just as even-keeled and balanced as he is and it has the cadence of being on your imaginary yacht escaping 2020, which is what we all want to do of course.
The strategic pictures that punctuate this tale are just as great if not better than the text! We love pictures in books.
Alex is going to educate you about who Arnold Stang is, how the USA should be more of a prophylactic society, and how to befriend a musk ox. For anyone that has ever watched Jeopardy (and if you haven't what are you doing here?!!) you know of Alex's exemplary life attitude that has been tremendous for decades and not a recent development. He has such eternal positivity that emanates through these pages lifting you at every turn of the page: his thesis for attitude is how do I solve life's challenges? Yes, he is a solver and his tenacity evidences this.
We love his background in hotel cuisine and the stores that go with it.
In fact, all stories were solid gold entertainment from Barbara drinking water (Barbara if you still like water we suggest The Peachy Deegan), practical jokes in 1966-67, The Ohio State University, Antiquities of early Jeopardy tech, and "Please tell me your name and where you're from."
We love how hair is a priority for Alex (see Salon Peachy-of course hair matters) and would totally agree that it is more important than military school. We love how he also loves Mark Twain-Alex go to the Mark Twain house in Hartford!-and how well read he is overall.
Crack open this total winner and you'll feel like Alex cracked open a bottle of vintage champagne just for you.

THE ANSWER IS…:
Reflections on My Life
by Alex Trebek
Since debuting as the host of Jeopardy! in 1984, Alex Trebek has been something like a family member to millions of television viewers, bringing entertainment and education into their homes five nights a week. Over the years, Alex has been approached a number of times about writing a book about his life. He has always resisted, until now.
Following Alex’s announcement last year that he had been diagnosed with Stage Four Pancreatic cancer, he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. Alex wanted to give his fans greater insight into the man they had encouraged and watched each night on their television for the past thirty-six years. Publishing a day ahead of his 80th birthday, THE ANSWER IS…: Reflections on My Life (Publication Date: 7/21) is an illuminating and poignant book, full of intimate stories. He didn’t want the book to just be a straightforward trip down memory lane. He writes, “This is not going to be a standard memoir. We’re just hitting the highlights. It’s a series of quick look-ins, revelations. It’s an aperçu of Alex Trebek, human being. What is he like? What has he done? How did he screw up?”
Some of the topics covered in the book include:
- Alex’s early life and upbringing in Canada, where he worked his way through college and took his first broadcasting job with the CBC.
- Lessons of courage, humility, and punctuality (10 minutes early or you are late!)
- Marriage, fatherhood, and the importance of family (the family you are born into, and the one you create)
- Alex’s personal politics and view on the state of our country today
- Lighter moments like when Alex reveals why he shaved his signature mustache, funny memories from Celebrity Jeopardy!, and his real opinion on Will Ferrell’s Saturday Night Live impersonation
- Insight into some of Jeopardy!’s most famous contestants like Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer and the strategy behind their record wins.
- A behind-the-scenes look into the game of Jeopardy!, and the immense planning that goes into the show
- Spirituality and philanthropy
- Life after his cancer diagnosis, his thoughts on retirement, and what it really means to be “tough”
Alex Trebek has hosted the syndicated quiz show Jeopardy! for thirty-six seasons, earning him eight Daytime Emmy Awards—including a Lifetime Achievement Award—and the Guinness World Record for most episodes of a game show hosted by the same presenter. Prior to Jeopardy!, he hosted various other quiz shows including The Wizard of Odds and High Rollers. He began his career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, working there for more than a decade. He graduated from the University of Ottawa and holds honorary doctorates from the University of Ottawa and Fordham University. He has worked with the humanitarian organization World Vision since the early 1980s, and has contributed to various other philanthropic organizations, including the USO, UNCF, National Geographic Society, and the Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission. Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, he resides in Los Angeles with his wife, Jean.
