Hot on its heels is the second masterpiece of Agatha Christie to feature the beloved sleuth, Hercule Poirot. We perhaps liked this even better as it involved two more great subjects: golf and France. So who's headed for the guillotine?! Again, as Christie passed before Peachy was even born, this is quite an old work but all that's old is new again and the classics endure and thrive! You all should be asking: What Took Us So Long to Review Agatha Christie? And what is taking you so long too?!
Of course, go in order and read The Mysterious Affair at Styles first. This is second.
Agatha Christie is in a class by herself, as she is third in books sold behind the Bible and Shakespeare. Reading her will elevate your thinking alone, as the power of deduction and details go a long way 100 years ago. Remember, this is detective work before DNA identification! There are no security cameras. There are no tracking devices. We are completely back to basics! There's no cell phones or emails to trace and there's no Nancy Grace. She wasn't born yet either.
Her sharp mind and her alacrity with her pen are miles ahead of most of the educated thinking world; this is not beach bum fluff at all. This is drink with a strong cup of coffee or tea sharpen your pencil kind of thriller that will send both chills up your spine and questions that are simply sugarplums dancing in your head until YOUR grey cells elucidate them after you read the thoughts of Poirot. Your deduction is highly unlikely to supersede his skills and thought process.
A train ride a letter engaging services, a trip to France....the yarn starts to become unraveled indeed. A new kind of Cinderella without her glass slippers comes to quite a scene. You expected one murder but as the tale evolves you'll find two are twice as nice. Overcoats, timepieces and beaucoup de particulars are hidden amongst paragraphs and chapters and it's up to you to see what's important. Be brighter than the servants!
Can you ever escape your past? Can you really reinvent yourself? Or does it all catch up with you? And what would you do for love? Admit it?!! As with the last book, you are in good company if you read this more than once to make sure it all sinks in soundly. Blackmail is alive and well and motives matter. Sharpen your dagger-like mind and perhaps your actual daggers too. Time to catch that train! Jump on opportunity!

Beloved detective Hercule Poirot made his second appearance in this tale of murder, blackmail, and forbidden love.
Hercule Poirot rushes to France in response to an urgent and cryptic plea from a client.
