2020-21 marks the first regular season in League history in which teams will play four consecutive games against one opponent.
When was the last time an NHL team played three consecutive games against the same opponent within a regular season?
2012-13 – The Ducks played three consecutive games against the Coyotes from March 2-6, 2013 (ANA: 1-0-2; PHX: 2-1-0) and Stars from April 1-5, 2013 (ANA: 2-1-0; DAL: 1-2-0).
How many times has the NHL seen 15 games played on the same day?
17 – 2020-21 will feature the 18th and 19th instances of the NHL contesting 15 games on the same day (May 1 & May 8, 2021). The 2019-20 regular season featured one 15-game day, which took place on Nov. 16, 2019 – a second was scheduled for April 4, 2020.

14 – From 1949-50 to 1966-67, the Original Six played each opponent 14 times per regular season (Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, NY Rangers & Toronto). Aside from the first season of the expansion era (10 GP in 1967-68), the most head-to-head games between opponents in one regular season is nine, seen in 1992-93.
Most Games Played vs. One Opponent, Including Playoffs
21 – There have been 12 instances in which a set of teams went head-to-head 21 times in a season including playoffs – the last occurrences of this were in 1964-65 (CHI vs. DET; CHI vs. MTL). The highest such total in the expansion era is 17, which happened three times in 1967-68 when the League added six new franchises (LAK vs. MNS; MNS vs. STL; PHI vs. STL).

13 – Detroit went 13-1-0 (26 points) against Chicago in 1950-51. In the expansion era (since 1967-68), the most wins against one opponent in a single season is eight, achieved 12 times (last: MTL in 2007-08 vs. BOS).

10 – The Canadiens won each of their 10 games against the Bruins in 1944-45. In the expansion era (since 1967-68), the largest regular-season sweep is eight games, achieved eight times (last: MTL in 2007-08 vs. BOS).

24 – Joe Malone scored 24 goals for the Canadiens against the original Senators in 1917-18, the League’s inaugural season (10 GP). In the expansion era (since 1967-68), the most goals by one player in a head-to-head regular-season series is 16 (Wayne Gretzky: 16 G in 8 GP w/ EDM vs. WIN in 1983-84). The most head-to-head goals by an active NHL player in the same scenario is nine, accomplished two times.
Most Assists vs. One Opponent, Single Regular Season
22 – Babe Pratt collected 22 assists for the Maple Leafs against the Bruins in 1943-44 (10 GP). The only other player to record at least 20 assists in a season against one opponent is Wayne Gretzky, a feat he achieved with the Oilers against two opponents in 1985-86 (21 A in 8 GP vs. LAK; 20 A in 8 GP vs. CGY). The highest such total recorded by an active NHL player is 14, by Sidney Crosby with the Penguins against the Islanders in 2006-07 (8 GP).

In the expansion era (since 1967-68), the most games played in a head-to-head regular-season series is 10, achieved five times during the 1967-68 campaign: Giacomin (w/ NYR vs. MTL & TOR), Glenn Hall (w/ STL vs. OAK), Cesare Maniago (w/ MNS vs. LAK) and Johnny Bower (w/ TOR vs. MTL).

13 – Terry Sawchuk (13-1-0) won 13 of his 14 appearances for Detroit against Chicago in 1950-51. In the expansion era (since 1967-68), the most wins by one goaltender in a head-to-head regular-season series is eight, achieved two times: Marc-Andre Fleury (8 GP w/ PIT vs. PHI in 2006-07) and Bruce Gamble (9 GP w/ TOR vs. DET in 1967-68).

5 – Bill Durnan of the Canadiens was first to achieve this feat in 1949-50 (5 SO in 13 GP vs. CHI) and Terry Sawchuk later did so twice with the Red Wings (5 SO in 13 GP vs. TOR in 1953-54 & 5 SO in 14 GP vs. BOS in 1951-52). How many times in NHL history have teams faced only intradivisional opponents in a regular season?
0 – 2020-21 marks the first regular season in League history in which teams will face only intradivisional opponents. Of note, there were no divisions from 1917-18 to 1925-26 and 1938-39 to 1966-67 when the NHL was comprised of no more than seven teams in each campaign.
How many times in NHL history has there been a division comprised of only Canada-based teams?
0 – 2020-21 marks the first regular season in NHL history to feature an all-Canadian division. The League had a Canadian Division from 1926-27 to 1937-38, but it included the New York Americans franchise in each season as well as the St. Louis Eagles for one in 1934-35.

7 – The NHL was comprised of only Canada-based teams in each season from 1917-18 to 1923-24, with the Boston Bruins becoming the first U.S.-based franchise in 1924-25. The League’s first seven seasons did feature instances of postseason games played abroad when non-NHL clubs competed for the Stanley Cup – the five contests between the Montreal Canadiens and PCHA’s Seattle Metropolitans during the suspended 1919 Final took place in Seattle, Wash.
When was the last time the NHL played a regular season without conferences?
1973-74 – The NHL featured 16 teams that season with eight apiece in the East and West Divisions. The League added the Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitals the next season (1974-75) and clubs realigned into two nine-team conferences, with the Prince of Wales Conference made up of the Norris and Adams Divisions and the Clarence Campbell Conference made up of the Smythe and Patrick Divisions.
How many times have teams been in the same division the season after meeting in the Stanley Cup Final?
8 – Including the Lightning and Stars in 2020-21 (Central Division) there have been eight instances of teams competing in the same division during the ensuing season after meeting in the Stanley Cup Final. This is the first such instance in 40 years.
