Like another of her works that came earlier, Almost Sisters is in an entirely different galaxy we thought compared to these newer amazing thrillers. We think she is on the right path now and excelling in her best work. Joshilyn is a talented writer.
Almost sisters is small town slow so if you like that this is exactly up your alley. Also with more frequent than usual mentions of pregnancy and kids, if you are a parent of a human this will also appeal to you.
We do like that there is Batman in it! We don't like that he left Gotham. We aren't leaving. Yet. Elect a new Mayor and Governor, New York! One that is pro-business and pro-excellence, both of which are ignored by the current occupants.

THE ALMOST SISTERS tackles issues of privilege and racial bias, small-town and urban communities, and what it means to be a good person. With empathy, grace, humor, and piercing insight, Jackson has penned a powerful, emotionally resonant novel that confronts the truth about privilege, family, and the distinctions between perception and reality—the stories we tell ourselves about our origins and who we actually are.
THE ALMOST SISTERS is the story of Leia Birch, a 38-year-old bestselling graphic novelist who fetches up pregnant after a tequila-soaked comics convention. Who can blame her for being swept off her barstool by a handsome man, dressed as a superhero? Though not the ideal way to start the family she always wanted, Leia thinks the hardest part will be telling her traditional, white, Southern family that she’ll be raising the biracial child of an anonymous guy in a Batman suit on her own.
Soon after, she learns that her goop-tastic stepsister’s seemingly perfect marriage – to Leia’s childhood best friend, partner-in-nerdom, and former lover – is imploding. Worse, she discovers her beloved grandmother, Birchie, has been slowly losing her mind, hiding a creeping dementia with the help of her lifelong best friend, Wattie.
Leia hurries home to Alabama to put her grandmother’s affairs in order, break the news about her pregnancy, and clean out the old Birch family Victorian. But dementia isn’t the only thing Birchie and Wattie have been hiding: there’s a body in the attic, and these two ninety-year-old women, one black, one white, hold the key to a murder mystery with roots that stretch all the way back to the Civil War. Solving it could cost the Birch family their reputation and their freedom, and will forever change the way Leia views her ancestors, herself, and her son’s future.
Jackson has masterfully crafted a story about family and sisters—characters who are strong, flawed, and loving—that will make you laugh, will cause you to think, and will restore your faith in our crazy, imperfect world. THE ALMOST SISTERS is a beautiful tale about the ties that connect us, the blood that binds us, redemption for the past and bright hope for the future.
