A classic never goes out of style!
And can you beat the location?  Of course not.  Opening with singing pigeons on the East River of Manhattan, Tom and Jerry reminds us of the world's favorite cat and mouse who play the ultimate cat and mouse game in the city that never sleeps, except for maybe the past year or so.  As Manhattan wakes up from the covid standstill, it's time to add a little levity in your life with the spectacularly entertaining Tom and Jerry Movie.  Just like the cartoon, but better, with a modern twist.

A la Roger Rabbit, both animated characters and human actors interact wonderfully, and many of the usual suspects of Manhattan hotspots are highlighted like Central Park, Sutton Place Park, AMNH, Columbus Circle, Madison Square Garden and more.  Of the humans, we liked Ken Jeong most as the hotel chef though his time on screen was much too short.  All of the animation was fabulous and the elephants and Spike the dog were especially great other than the obvious two stars.

You should know that there is not a real Royal Gate Hotel in Manhattan or we would have told you about it by now and would have covered galas there.  It is a fictitious hotel filmed in Leavesden, England at Warner Brothers Studios however many aspects of it remind us of both the greatly missed and sure never to be the same again as it is not owned by Americans The Waldorf=Astoria and The Plaza Hotel.  The Peacocks reminded us of Peacock Alley and we wonder if that is on purpose; of course we once reviewed Peacock Alley.

When Tom was in the rain in an alley, it reminded us of the end of Breakfast at Tiffany's when Holly Golightly is looking for cat in the rainy alley.  Tom teaches all a lesson in persistence with his tightrope and all the typical animated antics are heightened in a modern way.  We loved Jerry swimming in a bottle of champagne and if we were all small enough that might be the way to go to cool off over the next several days here now, literally.

Two thumbs up for the little clip of Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein on the hotel tv-you know, the smash hit by the ever-hilarious Mel Brooks-and the hotel room scuffle is a total barrel of monkeys.

We would have liked to have seen Tom expand on his musical abilities more like a Billy Joel cameo with the piano at maybe The Carlyle, or just as great but maybe better with Alexa Ray since she does actually perform there.  We hope for a sequel.
