They say now the future is female. We say the past is female and now it's being properly recognized by fantastic authors such as Signe Pike, who is completely new to us! Delving deep into the past of Celtic history, she has penned a winner with The Lost Queen, paying homage to the story of Languoreth. This is book one of the Lost Queen Trilogy.
Everyone has heard of Merlin the magician, but did you know he had a twin sister? You know now, and this is her story. This is a great escape novel and a fabulous alternative to the easy cheesy everyday nonsense the commoners read at the beach. This is pinkies up sophisticated history for those in the know! And, no one needs to escape more than Islanders fans right now so turn your frown upside down and pop open this fantasy tale from yesteryear.
The story flows at a solid pace and we were thoroughly entertained as a group. Though it represents a time clearly gone by, the parallels in today's world with family conflict and turmoil in the world around you will find striking.
Signe Pike is gifted linguistically and we respect the tremendous amount of research she has put into this intricate tale of historical fiction. It makes you wish that time machines really existed but since they don't, that's even more reason to read this.
For everyone that loved Game of Thrones, this book has your name all over it. Also we reviewed all of Vikings with the History channel and that similarly will overlap with the themes that are part of The Lost Queen.
Find The Lost Queen and make your beach day more meaningfully entertaining!

I write because I have seen the darkness that will come.
Already there are those who seek to tell a new history…
In THE LOST QUEEN (June 4, 2019; Atria; Paperback; 978-1-5011-9142-8), the first novel of a spellbinding debut trilogy, Signe Pike reveals the untold story of Languoreth, a historical queen of sixth-century Scotland and twin sister of the man who inspired the legend of Merlin.
Compared to Outlander, Camelot, and The Mists of Avalon, this extraordinary, deeply researched tale conjures Arthurian myth as it has never before been told: from the perspective of a smart, strong, and powerful woman who helped shape one of our most enduring legends, yet has been all but erased from the historical record by those who sought to destroy her.
An engrossing story of bravery, divided loyalties, and conflicted love, THE LOST QUEEN has everything a reader could want in a big, bold novel: courage in battle, enchantment, a changing society at war with itself, smoldering passion, treachery and betrayal, and beautiful writing about the natural world. At the center of it all is a girl becoming a woman who can throw a knife, heal the wounded, and fall in love with one man but marry another. A woman who must take frightening risks and make unimaginable sacrifices to secure the future of her people.
Headstrong Languoreth and her beloved brother Lailoken are raised in the Old Way of their ancestors. Mourning the death of her mother, a Wisdom Keeper divinely chosen to be a healer, young Langoureth struggles to accept that she’ll never inherit the skills and secrets of such a revered calling. Instead, as a princess of Cadzow, she is expected to uphold her duty with a royal marriage.
At the same time, a new religion is rising in Scotland, roiling the land with bloodshed and riots. As Languoreth’s family resists the burgeoning tide of Christianity, they also must keep a wary eye on the Anglo-Saxons encroaching from the east. When clashes along the border bring Emrys Pendragon’s army to her home, Languoreth finds all-consuming but forbidden love with a warrior named Maelgwn.
Catapulted into a world of violence and political uprising both inside and outside of her kingdom, Languoreth must grow up fast, finding deep reservoirs of cunning, fortitude, and courage as she learns to wield what authority she has within the confines of her time—and to experience love and passion on her own terms.
