#InauguralReview #Daikanyama @dkyamasushi at @Bloomingdales #TerrificTakeout by #WinnieChow #JudyChow #Japanese #Sushi #Manhattan #NewYork #ChestnutHill #Boston
Owner Winnie Chow
It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and where did we learn the pursuit of #EvertoExcel ??? Everyone knows Peachy is a Screaming Eagle and too bad Daikanyama wasn't at the Chestnut Hill Mall when Peachy was hoofing it there from Upper Campus! Previously on Whom You Know we have recommended Sonsie and Durgin Park (now unbelievably, sadly closed!) in Boston; we understand this has locations in both Chestnut Hill and Lexington, Massachusetts so now it is on our list for our next trip.
New York welcomed the opening of Daikanyama, the third location, on December 27, 2019 and it is at one of our favorite stores, BLOOMINGDALE'S!!! Nothing is better than eating and shopping, except of course shopping, eating and going to a hockey game.
Owners Winnie and Judy Chow were spectacular in their first review and you should know it is extremely difficult to find sushi or Japanese cuisine in general this superior.
We applaud them on having six salad choices. We chose the Daikanyama Salad: baby greens, avocado and special house dressing. The tomatoes were especially smashing and this is a perfect start; also, it is attractively presented.
Smile at the Rock Shrimp!
We liked everything we tried however, this might have been our favorite dish.
Bursting with spectacular flavor, the Rock Shrimp, found under House Special Appetizers, possesses a fabulously satisfying crunch in addition to the fantastic spectrum of exotic flavors achieved with the spicy aioli. Ponzu Sauce is also available.
If you are also totally unfamiliar with Japan, you should know that the name Daikanyama is derived from the Soho-like neighborhood of Tokyo. We have however met and featured former Ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy.
They earn high marks for presentation across the board!
Simply gorgeous.
Suggested by Winnie is the refreshing Cherry Blossom under the Makimono section of the menu. We do like sushi best in this hot weather! It was the perfect combination of salmon, avocado, and tempura crunch topped with tuna and is the best sushi we have had anywhere in 2021. Note if you are a new reader, a venue is written on ONLY if we have something good to say. This is our policy for all disciplines, and so far we have found over 26,000 good things to share with you.
The meat entree we chose is named Kurobuta Katsu: Black Pork covered with Japanese batter and fried, served with homemade specialty sauce. Not only is the pork itself tantalizingly tasty but also the apple homemade sweet sauce will make your day: it is a secret proprietary blend.
Another appetizer not to miss is the Gindara Saikyo Yaki: Broiled Sweet Miso Marinated Black Cod with chef's homemade sauce. We liked the talented sear on the outside that added depth to the poisson experience.
Finally, on the Grill for our seafood entree we chose the Salmon under "On the Grill."
As you know, we never edit pictures. You perform at this level of excellence like Winnie, or you don't. We had not had teriyaki in we can't tell you how long and now we can't wait to have it again. The salmon was grilled to perfection and joined by broccolini, tomato, and squash. This completely exceeded our expectations and there is nothing under the radar about Bloomingdale's nor Daikanyama! We look forward to continued high performance from this venue new to us.
