The New York Philharmonic announces details of The Schumann Connection, an exploration of the relationship between Robert and Clara Schumann through orchestral, chamber music, and contemporary music programs, March 6–20, 2022. The concerts present music by both Schumanns as well as contemporary works, including two World Premieres of works commissioned by the Philharmonic.
Gustavo Dudamel returns to conduct both weeks of orchestral concerts. The first week’s program, March 9–12, 2022, at Alice Tully Hall, includes Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, Spring, and Symphony No. 2. Between the two symphonies is the World Premiere of Gabriela Ortiz’s Clara, a New York Philharmonic–commissioned work for The Schumann Connection. Ortiz took inspiration from a diary entry by the 20-year-old Clara, who wrote: “I once believed that I possessed creative talent, but I have given up this idea; a woman must not desire to compose — there has never yet been one able to do it. Should I expect to be the one?” Ortiz’s work is a tribute to Clara and an acknowledgement of her talents, and is also a signal of gratitude to women throughout history who, through artistic expression, challenged the values of their societies.
The second orchestral program, March 17–20, 2022, at the Rose Theater, features Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3, Rhenish, and Symphony No. 4, with the World Premiere of Andreia Pinto Correia’s Os pássaros da noite (The Birds of Night), the second work the Philharmonic commissioned for the orchestral concerts. Pinto Correia drew the title of her work from a letter Robert Schumann wrote to his friend Johann Verhulst: “The melancholy birds of night still flit round me from time to time, yet they can be driven off by music.” Throughout the work, Pinto Correia finds ways to transmit coded messages, similar to the way that Robert and Clara communicated with each other through their own compositions.
“When I think about Schumann’s music, I am always amazed anew by the creativity, the melodic inventiveness, the virtuosic counterpoint, and the countless other ways he was able to paint with the palette of an orchestra,” said Gustavo Dudamel. “And of course there is the deep romanticism, inspired by his wife and muse, Clara. But she was so much more than that — a groundbreaking pianist and composer in her own right — and so we wanted to also present the world premiere of new works exploring the couple and their connection, written by two equally extraordinary voices: Gabriela Ortiz and Andreia Pinto Correia. To hear the symphonies performed together, alongside these new works, will truly be a journey for both the players and the audiences!”
On March 6, 2022, at the 92nd Street Y, Philharmonic musicians Principal Associate Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, Associate Principal Viola Rebecca Young, and cellist Patrick Jee join pianist Gilles Vonsattel in a chamber music concert featuring three works by Clara Schumann. Music by Beethoven and Brahms rounds out the program
The Philharmonic’s contemporary chamber series Sound ON returns on March 14, 2022, at The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The program examines modern-day creative partnerships akin to the one shared by Robert and Clara Schumann, by presenting works by composers and their musician-colleagues, partners, and spouses, including Wang Lu and Anthony Cheung, and Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe. Nadia Sirota, The Marie-Josée Kravis Creative Partner, curates and hosts the concert.
Additional programming may be announced; all programs are subject to change.
