#ReadThis 7L: The Seven Levels of Communication by #MichaelJMaher @BenBellaBooks @7LBook
Recently on Whom You Know, we were super impressed with Bernie Weiss's hit Ace It, so we decided to take a look at what else Ben Bella has published.
What could be more important than communication in ANY relationship? Especially in business, communication: both grammatically accurate and intrinsically honest communication is of the utmost importance. You know we think that already from the last 26,000 posts or so. We were curious to see what Michael Maher thought. We like how this work is a tribute to his late father and how the double-whammy of wisdom is doled out to the reader.
Much of what is contained between these two covers we came to the conclusion is common sense, however, though we believe our readers to be high-level, we also know that common sense is really not so common these days. We like the step-by-step literal approach Maher takes to instructing his readers about how exactly to communicate and how to respond from the responses you are given or lack of responses and plan to improve or move on.
There are a lot of corporate buzz-words (actionable!) so if you are into that, the kool-aid is there for you to drink! However, we would caution anyone from being a corporate robot in any way, shape or form and say that authenticity trumps all and originality cannot be beat. You absolutely want to put your own signature on your own plan and take some of this with a grain of salt. Also remember your specific audience and your specific geography. What might work in middle america is NOT going to work in Manhattan and obviously we are Manhattan-centric.
The verbiage and overall english and word choice involved here is straightforward and basic so if English is your second language, this book is especially for you. Certainly if you were taking a business class in middle school which is common in private schools here in the USA this would be a great textbook.
We love that Trump is mentioned on page 28 and note that the book was published in pre-presidential 2014 so the way Trump was treated by the media then was an entirely different ballgame.
The communication colored pyramids are laudable and add to the overall conceptual assets of this work and the glossary in the back is also a plus. We particularly liked the steps to a power note on page 52. He reiterates the benefits of Dale Carnegie which we have been bragging about for a decade.
We were sad to see on page 133 that Rick murdered the sacred, beloved English language by using good as an adverb. Good is an adjective. Well is an adverb. Rick is in good company with Instagram who also have to learn English.
We agree: showing is better than telling. Maher shows you a lot, so take it in and read this!
